T & My Niece (Off Topic)

T and my niece joined me and mom at church on Sunday. We had a nice brunch afterwards and I got this great pic of her that I wanted to share. You've seen pics of her sick - but this picture truly captures her essence. She is beautiful, fun and crazy! Her hair is beginning to grow back beautifully. She has a very loose curl pattern - what I used to call "good hair" before I became culturally educated.

The women in my family are slowly going natural. Even mom will be locking in June! She had her consult with Gigi two weeks ago and got her test locks. This is MONUMENTAL for my mom - you guys have no idea. T and I are so proud of her.

You know what I always say..."it's natural to be natural!"

Twist It Out @ Almost 23 months

I'm in a really good mood tonight. I had dinner with Gigi at a great restaurant, wonderful food and wine, awesome bread pudding dessert, good conversation and just a relaxed atmosphere after a busy Monday. We both needed it.

I'm three days away from my 23 month loc'versary! I rolled my hair with soft spike curlers last night, but it didn't fully dry. (I rolled it too late.) It's only May and our temp was 85 today and that's cool for Texas. I have so much hair - whah...did I say that?....yes, like I was saying...I have so much hair, it was really bothering me today. The Lottabody makes my braids expand, giving my hair body and fullness, which I really like, but the volume also makes for a lot of hair to deal with.

I talked to Gigi tonight over dinner about cutting me some bangs, 'cause the top of my hair can sometimes be flat and it doesn't hold a curl well. She nixed the cutting thing in the bud. I wear head bands but the pressure at the nape of my neck is bothersome and pulls the locks in the back which is uncomfortable or I find myself with a headache mid-way through the day. What to do?

I came home tonight and played around with flat twist for the first time. Just something to keep my locks out of my face, but still stylish and walla! Here's my first attempt. It was really easy. Although I'm sure I can do a better job with a little more practice. I stopped at the dollar store and baught some of those small butterfly clips, but they were too small. I wound up breaking most of them. So I secured the ends of the twist with black rubber bands.

I like the look alot and I love the fact that my hair is out of my face without head bands or anything causing pressure to my head or my locks. I'm sure that I'll play around with this style a lot more during this summer 'cause Texas heat ain't no joke. And I certainly don't plan on cutting my locks. Afterall, I'm almost at 2 years. I know you can see that I need some color, but I'm holding on to get my highlights for my two year anniversary. I'm a little nervous....highlights are a bit of stretch for me...but I'mmo do it anyway 'cause I'm Sisterlocked and free!

By the way, Malcolm liked my flat twists also!

Addendum: Don't use black rubber bands to secure your flat twist. They're VERY HARD to get out. A reader suggested using strands of my locks and tie them like a bow tie to secure the twist. Great idea! Thanks, Lisa.

Sisterlocks, Free Style, Caruso's, Soft Spikes & Dinner

I had dinner with a few of my Sisterlock friends on Friday in downtown Dallas. A great way to end the work week.

Here's Sister-In-Locks, who recently celebrated a birthday. Her highlighted locks are da bomb! She set her hair with Soft Spike Curlers. S-I-L is almost 3 years locked.

This is my new favorite pic of Detra. Her locks are dark, healthy, shiny and frame her face so well. She's great at doing the freestyle thing. But admitted recently falling in love with the Caruso's. Pics, Detra, pics! Detra locked right after Creyole and me - so I'm guessing she's coming up on about a year and a half or more. (Ladies email me if I'm way off with the timeframes.)

Creyole and her locks look gorgeous in this shot. She has a natural beauty. Her locks are really filling out nicely. She maintains them herself and finds retightening her own hair relaxing. She will be locked 2 years this month.

If you're fully locked AND your hair is healthy AND you condition AND moisturize color can be fun. You can even highlight SL!

And what can I say about this pic except they should be Sisterlocks models.

Mad love and a big shout out to our girl TRA who had a conflict and couldn't make it. It wasn't the same without you!

(I'm wearing a Caruso set in these shots. As my length grows, they give me a little body but not much curl. They're great for short and mid-length hair and when your locks need a lil sumthin' sumthin' in a hurry.)

Zits & the Light Bulb!

The light bulb came on today as to why I suddenly began breaking out with acne.

I'd wracked my brain trying to determine what I had done differently or changed. I wear the same Mac makeup. Granted, I haven't been eating properly, but I've done that sporadically for years.

As I was running errands this weekend, it occurred to me that I ran out of my Biotin pills over a month ago and with such a hectic April simply didn't have time to pick up more.

When I went to purchase Biotin for the first time about a year or so ago, the guy at the Vitamin Shoppe recommended their Skin, Hair & Nails formula. He said it contained as much Biotin needed daily while getting the benefits of addtional vitamins. The price was great so I thought I'd give it a try. I never really knew if they were "doing" anything - just that it was healthy to take them.

Ok that's my guess on the zits mystery. I started taking the Biotin again today, in fact they only had a 300 tablet bottle. I purchased it, ruling out running out anytime this year. I'm anxious to see if my skin clears up.
I'll report back on this issue in a month or so. I know y'all will be anxiously waiting on the status of Blaq's zits...LOL! I crack myself up.
