My Sisterlocks were a hit for Halloween. Being one of two African Americans in the office, everyone was more fascinated with my Bantu Knots than my costume. They all wanted to touch them and questioned, "how'd you get your hair like that?"

Sisters To Sisters

October is designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For those of you who have followed my blog for some time, you know that my baby sister and best friend, "T" was diagnosed four years ago. You can read the original post dated June 1, 2006.

There are countless ways you can assist in helping to fund research for a cure of this horrible disease. It's as easy as visting the Breast Cancer web site and clicking a link so that a woman receives a free mammogram or as simple as collecting and submitting Yoplait Yogurt lids to help fund the fight against Breast Cancer. For every lid submitted by December 31, 2009, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure up to $1.5 million with a guaranteed $500,00 donation. Of course, there's the annual Susan G. Komen Walk held throughout the country each year. We can all do something - don't wait until it personally affects you.

I traveled home to Texas this weekend to spend time with my sister and family. T and I had a blast as we always do! And although you can't tell from these beautiful photos of her - she is very ill, suffers and struggles daily. Yet, she continues to inspire, uplift and motivate others who are in need. She has a big heart and is as beautiful inside as her outward appearance.
I'd like to enlist your help - sisters to sisters: For those of you who believe in a higher power - please remember my sister, Teresa and if you feel compelled to do so - please comment with words of encouragement for my "lil sis" as a very special gift of strength to her during this time.

She is indeed my Shero.

Righting the Wrong @ 51M

I've been busy with life - growing beyond measure along with my Sisterlocks.

My self portrait attempts were not quite successful this month. I ran out of patience and time before I could capture a good shot. But when combined as a collage, they somewhat right the wrong providing a visual of my Sisterlocks at 51M. They remain healthy, strong, vibrant and ever growing.

I'll have food for the mind and spirit when next we meet. And yes, I'm still lovin' my Sisterlocks!

Up Do @ 50M

I haven't done much with my hair this summer except wear it mostly in a pony tail because of it's length and the summer heat - did I say length? Oh, the beauty of Sisterlocks!

Today for church I did this quick and easy up do that I thought I'd share with my readers. I took these photos myself using a tripod, so they're not the best. Since I wasn't really happy with most of the shots I included several in the following slideshow hoping that collectively you'll gather a feeling for the style and the ease in recreating it yourself.

How To Create Your Own Up Do

Supplies needed: Hair tie, a few hair pins
Time required: 5 minutes or less
Instructions:

Pull locks into a high pony, ideally using a hair tie. (Hair ties secure the locks without pulling or snagging, they stay in place and they don't give me a headache.)
Gently remove a few locks along the front and nape of the neck if you so desire (to add softness)
Partially separate locks in high pony down the middle, gently pulling each side towards the back, tucking ends underneath hair tie
Smooth and shape, tucking any loose locks with hair pins
Curl locks at nape of neck and front
You're done!

Mom recently celebrated her two year loc'versary. I'm so proud of her. Here's mom a mere two years later with locks sitting on her shoulders, getting compliments left and right and having to pull her hair up off her neck. She even surprised me and did her own braidout for Sunday church. Don't know why I was surprised - that's BlaqKofi's momma.

Mom never studied Sisterlocks or natural hair. She doesn't even own a computer. I remember feeling uncertain and nervous accompanying her to the consultation, still not quite believing she would commit. This is a woman who has been on the same job for 35 plus years - to say she's not a proponant of change is a major understatement. I so firmly knew this facet of her that my mind never even remotely processed the equation of Mom + Natural + Sisterlocks. Don't know why not - that's BlaqKofi's momma.

Consultation complete, test locks installed we thanked my consultant, Gigi and headed for the car. Once outside...

Mom:"I thought we were going to make my appointment to get them put in?"
Blaq: "Are you sure?"
Mom: "That's what I came here for."
Blaq: "Alright then. Let's go make your appointment."

I was so excited. We turned right around and made her appointment. A month later she was on lock down. Little did I know that while quietly observing my natural awakening, mom in turn was awakened. I should have known. That's BlaqKofi's momma!

Two years later, my sister has observed my mom's journey and recently said to me,

Sister: "if my hair could look as good as yours and moms, I'd get Sisterlocks."
Blaq: "it can"

Another unlikely equation, or so I thought. She is now preparing to cross over. (I think there's a lesson in there somewhere.)

Each one reach one, teach one, lift one...

It's Official

I did it, my Sisters - BlaqKofi, Certified Sisterlocks Consultant. The first and only certified consultant in the State of Oklahoma! I discovered this wonderful news Thurs, July 30, a bright spot in an otherwise very stressful day. (Thanks for your thoughtful phone call, LaShaune.)

A special thank you to my first three clients, "M" "S" and "Abuelita" for being the first to put your trust in me. I'm certified because of each of you. Locked4Life!

My certification, a blog comment from Happiest Nappy (I ab-so-lute-ly LOVE that name!) compelled me to share the following in celebration of my Sisters. The author is unknown.

A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot, humid day, drinking iced tea and visiting with her mother. As they talked about life, about marriage, about the responsibilities of life and the obligations of adulthood, the mother clinked the ice cubes in her glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober glance upon her daughter 'Don't forget your Sisters,' she advised, swirling the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass.

‘They'll be more important as you get older. No matter how much you love your husband, no matter how much you love the children you may have, you are still going to need Sisters. Remember to go places with them now and then; do things with them.

'Remember that 'Sisters' means ALL the women... your girlfriends, your daughters, and all your other women relatives too. You'll need other women. Women always do...'

‘What a funny piece of advice!' the young woman thought. Haven't I just gotten married? Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a married woman, for goodness sake! A grownup! Surely my husband and the family we may start will be all I need to make my life worthwhile!'

But she listened to her Mother. She kept contact with her Sisters and made more women friends each year. As the years tumbled by, one after another, she gradually came to understand that her Mom really knew what she was talking about. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman, Sisters are the mainstays of her life.

After more than 50 years of living in this world, here is what I've learned:

THIS SAYS IT ALL:
Time passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Jobs come and go.
Love waxes and wanes.
Men don't do what they're supposed to do.
Hearts break.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors...
Careers end.

BUT.........Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girl friend is never farther away than needing her can reach. When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on,praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.

Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you...Or come in and carry you out. Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers, Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended family all bless our life!

The world wouldn't be the same without women, and neither would I. When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other.

Everyday, we need each other still.

Pass this on to all the women who
help make your life meaningful.

I just did.

Dedicated to those who encourage me to continue Natural Awakening. I am inspired by those who write to share how NA influenced their decision to lock and it's usefulness as a resource throughtout their journey.

The Michael That I Choose To See

Michael Jackson and I are relatively the same age - separated by about 16 months. His untimely death and my impending 50th birthday has caused me to do a great deal self reflection. I'm more focused than ever on living my dreams and trying to be happy for, as evidenced by Michael, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, Farah Fawcett, Billy Mays, David Carradine, Gerald Levert, Sean Levert and others, tomorrow is not promised.

His death has touched me, troubled me, hurt me. As a young girl, my bedroom walls were plastered with Jackson 5 photos. I would save every dime to buy a teen magazine for another photo to add to my collection. The first concert I ever attended was to see the Jackson 5. I wrote Michael countless, nine-year-old-never-mailed-fan-letters.

So much has been written and said about Michael's life - there's not much left to say. As I struggled to process his death along with all that's occuring in my life, I received an email from a friend of mine, Linda Jones of Dallas, whose words fully captured my feelings about Michael, his death and how I choose to remember him. I haven't had much time to blog. Despite less frequent updates I am encouraged by the constant emails and messages I receive from queens who are discovering their inner beauty and strength through their naturalness, Sisterlocks and Natural Awakenings.

My locks remain healthy and strong. Not much change other than added length. My Sisterlocks customer base continues to grow and I am blessed. I am awaiting certification notifcation from the Home Office.

Until then, I ask that you lift me as I lift you.

4 Years To-Da-Day & Stronger

On this day, four years ago, I was anxiously preparing to arrive at Gigi's shop to begin my Sisterlocks journey. Little did I know of the transformation that would occur both externally and internally, making me a better, stronger woman. It has indeed been a Natural Awakening beyond measure.

I have much to share and reflect on - so drop back for some Sisterlocks Blaq'isms and, of course, more Sisterlocks photos!

Don't be a Lockzilla!

Tonita from LockItUp posted this yesterday. I reprint it here, slightly modified, with her consent. It was too good not to share!

Are you a good customer? On time, clean hair, discussing any concerns you have with your consultant?

Sisterlocks is not a hobby, it's a business. Just like with most business owners, a Sisterlocks consultant wants to do a good job and needs satisfied customers. I've read many posts about great consultants who are professional and conscientious.

A trainee may be slower at an install and retightening, but her speed will catch up with her training. Don't be too hard on the beginners.

As a customer, follow your consultant's advice, wear a scarf or other cover on your locks to reduce lint buildup, no oily products, heavy conditioners, use the Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo recommended, braid and band.

If you want to DIY (do-it-yourself) take the retightening class after six months of loc'dom. There are no short cuts to successful locking. Consultants want you to enjoy your natural transition.

Many consultants probably have Lockzilla stories that you never hear about: hard to please customers, missed appointments, late, unclear hair, not calling...

I'm proud to introduce my second and third full install clients. Both are beautiful spirits - inside and out. Please join me in welcoming them to the Sisterlocks family.

Client #2

Client No. 2 has some breakage and sparceness along the front hairline. I'm confident it will grow and fill in with time. In the meantime, she's purchased lots of funky, cute and fun headbands to wear. I spritzed her completed locks with water and rolled them on SoftSpiker curlers to add volume. I allowed her locks to air dry while we discussed washing techniques, banding and braiding and lock care. I removed the SS, finger combed and added her headband for a finished look.

Client #3

Client No. 3 had 8 inches of all natural, beautiful hair. It was a real treat to install her locks. After completing the front sections of her hair, I spritzed with water, braided and left in place while I locked the back sections. I then spritzed and braided the back sections. Her hair air dryed while we dicussed lock care, washing, banding and braiding. I took the braids down, spritzed her ends lightly with water, rolled them on SoftSpike curlers and sat her under the dryer for 30 minutes. This gave her a crinkly, curly look with volume which she loved.

I preferred using the Soft Spike curlers rather than heat on both of their completed locks. Their hair was soft, absorbed water quickly and I knew it would dry quickly. Using the Soft Spikes gave them a style that would last for several days as they became acquainted with their natural freedom.

And the Color Is...

Rockstar inquired about my new hair color. I wondered if anyone noticed. Let me go ahead and through this disclaimer out there first - I DO NOT RECOMMEND COLOR for those who are not completely locked. Consult your loctician first.

I admired the hair color of two Sisterlocks wearers I met during my consultant training. In speaking to them individually, I learned they both use and recommend Naturtint. Coincendentally, they both use the Hazelnut Blonde color which I found so becoming against their brown skin tone. I'd often stop and examine the Naturtint green box at the health food store, but passed it up primarily because I didn't know anyone who had ever used it AND the people on the boxes looked nothing like me.

I needed two boxes of Hazelnut. There was only one on the shelf. So I thought I'd try the Dark Golden Blonde, a close and complimentary color. I used Hazelnut in the front section of my hair and Dark Golden Blonde in the back - no specific reason - just something I tried. I'm pretty happy with the results. The two colors compliment each other and my natural hair color nicely, giving my locks a highlighted look without the harshness of bleaching. Again, not scientific - just something I tried. Later in researching the product more, I learned the following:

Naturtint is a permanent hair colorant with vegetable ingredients. It is enriched with wheat, soy, corn and oat plant protein complex designed for hair restructuring and protection. Naturtint contains no ammonia and its raw materials are of the highest cosmetic quality. Naturtint is made up of a range of 28 different tones which can be mixed together to produce infinite color ranges so as to achieve a unique, personal tone. Naturtint completely covers all normal grey hair, its effects do not wash out and it is gentle on even the most fragile hair.

Sisterlocks - Study & Know Thy Self

There's been a recent Lock-It-Up thread with people complaining about their Sisterlocks installs and/or consultants. It serves as a good learning tool for newbies and those contemplating locking. Of course, I shared my opinion, expanded here along with photos for my readers.

"I've only had my locs for about 5 days. My hair was 3-4 inches in length. I had a trainee do my hair and it took her apprx 30 hours (not including the breaks) and I don't think that's normal.

The average from what I've seen is 15-20 hours. I think it took her so long because she made them so tiny, I don'tknow how many I have, I got tired of counting at 200 from just the sides and a portion of the top. If I can guess I probably have between 600-800 in my head but they are super thin.
As for price, I paid what I considered to be the average around here, but I thought trainees charged less, obviously not in my case.

As for me liking my hair, honestly after the 2nd day I started freaking out not liking the loose ends and there were holes in my locks where they were not installed tightly I guess. Just being hypercritical and over analyzing. But after talking with a couple of SL ladies... I've calmed down and learned to accept my hair. If I had it to do over again, I would have researched better than what I did by getting references from actual clients other than just looking at pics and demanded she use the correct tools in doing my hair."
Blaq's Response

Try not to fret too much. I've been reading all of the threads on Lock-It-Up about misrepresented locks. But give them a chance AND your consultant. It's only been five days. Your hair is going to change so much and so quickly...Take that energy and educate yourself. Read blogs, look at photos. Go to my blog and click on the 2005 link on the left and view my early photos. You'll see how rapidly your locks will change.

BlaqKofi Sisterocked 2 days/2 weeks

And don't micro examine every lock - cause I can assure you, not everyone of mine is 100% perfect and my consultant has over 15 years in the business. When hair locks it begins to intertwine around itself. The hair that used to come out in our combs and brushes begins to encircle itself in a cylinder form - thus locking. It's not a perfect cylinder - how could it be? It's a bunch of individual hairs - thus individual locks.

Regarding discounts, Trainees MAY offer an introductory price for new clients, but it's NOT a requirement. I offer an introductory price for my first three clients, for entrusting me and my skills and for helping me to become certified. I explain thoroughly during my consultations that they in return will get a quality product, but it's going to take a time commitment.

My first installation took 30 hours, she had 6 inches of hair and we only stopped for a 30 minute lunch. I was really questioning myself - comparing myself to others who had done this many years more than me. I spoke to several consultants who reassured me that my install time was not very different and even less in some cases than others and my speed would increase given time. I'm proud when I see the work I produced and my client's happy face. Besides, she's my walking, talking advertisement. Accuracy and a quality product were more important than speed. My speed, I can work on; but you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Her Sisterlocks had to be correct.

1st Client day 1/3 wks later

Taking breaks is important for a quality product. Your consultant is usually standing on her feet the entire time. If she's tired, you'll get a tired looking product. That's why I always schedule my clients over a two-day period.

I looked at your photos and your grids and the number of locks appear to be in line with what is taught in the Consultant's class. Your locks well swell to 100% of their current size, so naturally they are small. That's a primary Sisterlocks characteristic which allows you more styling flexibility.

Finally, the ends of your locks are not suppossed to be locked during installation. They'll turn into cute curly ques initially, then evolve into little balls which will eventually drop off and the ends will seal. That's all part of the locking process which takes time and patience. Four years later, I still have some unlocked ends.

I say be observant, be informed, be educated about your hair and Sisterlocks. Don't be hesitant to discuss your concerns with your Consultant. Perhaps she can alleviate your anxiety and repair any locks you have concerns with. This also lets her know that you're educated about the process and she may up her game, if that's the case.

Until then sit back and chill. Remember why you chose to lock in the first place. And relish how good your head of natural hair feels.

I like the response Tonita posted on LockItUp to someone complaining about their locks not "being perfect."

"I have been SL'd for over 2 years. My locks are not perfect nor did I think they would be since my hair isn't perfect. Like most with locks they have bumps, knots, thin and thick spots, etc., etc. Overall, you can't tell, the imperfections are hidden.

Your locks will swell and settle and you may wonder why was I so distraught? Locks aren't perms or weaves or wigs that look "perfect" out of the chair. Locks mature over time. The first change is convenience, the second is settling, the third is growth and more change.

If you decide to get locks, do your research. What will my new locks look like? What is the locking and retightening process? Can I love my nappy hair? Do I have the PATIENCE to lock?

Don't get caught up in lock envy. Love your locks at every stage. They will grow into the head of beautiful locks that initially caught your attention."

Dont' get it twisted. Sisterlocks aren't perfect, they're not supposed to be. Do your part - study and know thy self then watch your locks grow charactistically and uniquely into you.

Lord, Please Give Me Good Hair

When I was around the age of 6 or 7 my mom and I were watching Ike & Tina Turner on some variety show. They'd sing Proud Mary and when they got to the "rollin, rollin', rollin' on the river...doo duh, doo, doo fast part, the Ikettes would join Tina on stage with all this energy and this hair! This straight "white girl" hair. They were slinging it and flinging it. I was mesmerized. I'd never seen anything like it, Black women with "straight hair." In awe I asked my mom...

B: Momma, how'd they get their hair like that?

M: They're wigs.

B : Then how can they shake their heads like that without it coming off?

M: It's sown into their scalp.

B: Thinks, silently: wow that must really hurt...but to have hair like that would be worth it!

"Lord, please give me good hair." That was my prayer as a child. After all, both my sisters had "good hair." Thus being spared the Saturday evening ritual of the hot comb with it's inherent ear holding and singed hair. Life, at least as far as it related to my hair, just didn't seem fair.

How I despised my own unruly hair with it's kinkiness, it's thickness. I hated even more the process I had to endure in order for it to look "good." Or perhaps the fact that I had to go through a process at all fueled my hair displeasure.

My hair felt more like a liability - a punishment rather than something to be proud of. Once processed, I became enslaved to it. "No, I can't go swimming - just got my hair straightened." "No I can't run and play, it'll sweat my hair out." I didn't want to endure my mom's wrath nor the painful wash and hot comb if I didn't have to.

Since God didn't seem to be listening, I fantasized about saving enough money to buy me some hair like Tina Turner or Diana Ross. I vowed to bravely endure any pain associated with getting that straight hair sown into my scalp. Afterall, it couldn't be any worse than what I already endured with my kinky hair.

Little did I know that the hair that graced my head was the very hair I prayed for. That the same thick, unruly, kinky hair I despised was indeed an asset. I have hair that I can style, grow down my back, cut, curl, krinkle, pin up, swim and exercise in, walk-in-the-rain, ride-with-the-windows-down, wash-whenever-I-want-to, go-to-bed-looking-pretty, wake-up-looking-pretty, or do-absolutely-nothing-and-still-look-pretty-kinda-hair!

Hair that makes me feel good about me. Hair that makes me proud. And, oh yeah, hair that I can sling and fling, just like Tina and the Ikettes!

Thank you Lord for answering prayers, for Sisterlocks, for natural awakenings and for giving me "good hair."

BlaqKofi's First Installation

I completed my first installation last week. It was a learning as well as moving experience to personally introduce someone to the freedom of Sisterlocks. A thousand thanks to my first client, I'll affectionately refer to her as "Abuelita," for her patience and confidence in me and my abilities.

I visited a Harlem Renaissance traveling exhibit at my local museum of art this past week and was moved by this photo taken by James VanDerZee in 1928 entitled, "Cosmeticians." (I couldn't find a larger image to share.)

I stood there, gazing at each beautiful, black, hopeful face. I looked again at each, studying their processed hair and the significance of my first Sisterlocks installation took on greater personal meaning for me. I am thankful to live in a time where I can witness the first African American President and women of color proudly wear their kinky crowns of hair glory for the world to see. I reflected on my client's beaming face as she looked in the mirror and saw for the first time her own beauty in its most natural form. Mental chains broken and one more walking, talking, sharing Sisterlocks soldier - powerful!

Perhaps these photos from 1928 and 2009 can communicate more succinctly the progress we have made as African American women in our self knowledge and awareness.

Mom Sisterlocked 20M

I was contacted last week by two elders (a term of respect) ironically within two days of each other. Both were inspired by mom's Sisterlocks photos.

Mother Lolo, 62 years of age, has been locked since June 08 and simply needed a little encouragement. You know the stage we all go through when we're anxiously waiting for that Sisterlocks growth spurt and feeling a little uncertain. We're ready for our babies to grow long, strong and thick.

Mother GC of Ohio, described herself as 62 y/o, retired and turning grey. She was getting Sisterlocks installed this past week and was a little anxious and uncertain about what to expect - just as we all were.

How awesome that our elders are embracing their natural beauty! Mother Lolo hang in there. I assure you, you'll be a natural hair role model for others soon. Mother GC, welcome home to Sisterlocks and natural freedom. Your "small locks" will soon thicken to even more beautiful tresses.

I've never met either of you, but I'm just as proud as I am of my mom. I'm honored that you considered BlaqKofi and Natural Awakenings a resource. The Houston '09 Sisterlocks Training Class

New Friends
I met some wonderful sisters in the training. Thanks to everyone who allowed me to take and post their photos. Shout out to Ms. Cleburne (you know who you are!) Enjoyed meeting you girl.

Master Trainer
To say I have an entirely new perspective on Sisterlocks and Dr. Cornwell would be a major understatement. This new admiration and appreciation is due to my Master Trainer. She was phenomenal in her presentation and knowledge of Sisterlocks. If I was a business owner, this is the type of person I'd want representing my organization. Kudo's to Dr. C 'cause yo girl did you and Sisterlocks proud and righteous.

She ran a tight ship and made sure that we left there with all the information, tools and techniques needed to fully represent Sisterlocks and Dr. Cornwell. She shared a wealth of Sisterlocks and business knowledge along with wonderful and often funny anecdotes that we could all relate to. She is consistently true to Dr. Cornwell's vision and guidelines. She has my full respect and admiration and check out her beautiful Sisterlocks.

Commissioned
Anyone who visits my blog knows that I LOVE Sisterlocks. My training has heightened that love with a true appreciation for the commitment and ingenuity of Dr. Cornwell. What she has done for us as African-American women is quite phenomenal.

She was ingenuous enough to create a method that takes advantage of our POSITIVE hair attributes allowing us the flexibility and freedom to style, cut, color and grow our hair in its natural state. Sisterlocks breaks mental and physical chains of hair bondage. It's the natural freedom I so often write about. Talk about seeing the glass half full! Then to have the fortitude to perform trial and error on her own hair for years - amazing! Look at my day one install photos. Then view my current photos. We know what to expect during that transition from install to settling phase thanks to Dr. Cornwell. But she had no web sites or blogs to refer to, no LockItUp discussion board to seek advance from - just her resolve.

I've been a walking, talking Sisterlocks advertisement since I got them almost four years ago. After my consultant training I feel as if I've been promoted from Sisterlocks soldier to Sisterlocks officer. I've been commissioned.

Through my blog and now as a consultant trainee, I'm proud to be able to introduce others to the same hair and life freedom Dr. Cornwell and Sisterlocks has gifted me.

Afterall, I always say, "it's natural to be natural."

The weather was perfect, the lift lines short, the slopes nicely groomed and the scenery breathtaking. I ski'd runs I wouldn't have thought of last year and my Sisterlocks did just fine in the snow!

On February 14, my consultant, Gigi and fellow consultant Tafi hosted a "Customer Appreciation" event. Their invitation described the day perfectly. Here's a written and visual recap of a beautiful day of Sisterlocks and Sisterhood.

Gigi - Transitions
Gigi announced after over 30+ years in the hair care industry she is transitioning to her next higher good - that of being a Life Coach. It was a bittersweet moment as she announced that most of her clients would transition to Tafi. Her clients already know of her calming nature and insight. Undoubtedly, she'll be a successful life coach. Afterall, she's been unofficially coaching everyone who has had the privilige of sitting in her chair, particularly me. BlaqKofi - Transitions
My blog has been my venue for educating Sisters about the beauty and freedom of naturalness and Sisterlocks. As I write this, I am in Houston, Texas attending Sisterlocks Consultant training. I moved to Oklahoma with my husband after our marriage last year and learned that there is not one certified Sisterlocks consultant nor trainee in the entire state! I've thought of taking the Sisterlocks training for some time. The right circumstances and timing presented themselves and here I am. I am so excited to have the option of not only writing and motivating sisters to their natural freedom, but actually being able to offer the service of crossing over.

For those of you in the DFW Metro, please extend your support and patronage to both Gigi and Tafi. Anyone in Oklahoma desiring to cross over or in need of retightening assistance, I would consider it a privilege to have you as my client.

But for now, I have to go and prepare my mannequin's locks for class tomorrow.

I was blessed to spend this past weekend in Texas with my family. Their mere love lifts and encourages me so. We all had a great time at church followed by a fun photo shoot. Allow me to share my family - and check out how mom's locks have grown. I am so proud of her. You gone, gurl!!!!!

My beautiful niece, my apprentice photographer and my road dawg! I'm slowly converting her to naturalness. She was my guest at Gigi's Customer Appreciation event on Saturday where she was introduced to every length, style, age and shade of Sisterlocks and sisters for that matter. Look forward to some great pics and a post highlighting this beautiful event full of Sisterlocked sisters and brothers.

Those of you emailing and giving Blaq all that sisterly love, support and encouragement - I love you from the bottom of my heart.

I simply share Blaq - my peaks and valleys with Sisterlocks and life. Cause no matter how the outside looks, no matter how long you grow your locks - what's truly within will ultimately raise its head. If it's ugly on the inside - ugly gone come out. If it's hurtin' on the inside, here comes more hurt to the detriment of you and/or others because like attracts like.

We must ask ourselves, what was my lesson? Retain the lesson, because once you've been there, you never want to return. File it away in the "dat ain't never gone happen to me again" folder and bury that which is dead so that you can give life to a greater you.

I don't have all the answers. Hell sometimes on this journey, I don't even know the questions.

Still I Rise - Part I

I have a tradition to begin the new year of Natural Awakenings with words of encouragement and motivation. For I have come to learn that this journey is much deeper than the external tresses that adorn our heads. I contend that the courage and strength to return to our naturalness begins internally and extends outward, a continuum of physical, emotional and spiritual growth.

It has been impossible to try to encourage and share with others when I couldn’t even encourage myself. I believed my Jan 1 post to be my last. So I must first extend sincere gratitude to my readers who placed my bruised spirit on their shoulders and through their posts helped me to once again begin to rise…

As we proceed on this journey of Natural Awakenings I share with you some helpful tools that I use to assist me on my internal journey of discovering the true BlaqKofi and my purpose.

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne (DVD, Book, Audio) I own all three. This series was the start of my internal change. I recommend watching the DVD first. The audio lives in my car cd player and on my iPod. Powerful and life altering!

Loving What Is by Byron Katie – I was recently introduced to this author by my friend, consultant and unofficial life coach, Gigi through Oprah’s Soul Series. (Click the link to view Oprah's interview with Byron Katie.) I am currently reading and experiencing this life changing work.

No Matter What – Lisa Nichols I was first introduced to Lisa Nichols through The Secret. Gigi introduced me to her No Matter What audio which spoke to me so powerfully and gave me the insight to ask “a better question.” Not, “why me?,” but rather, “what did I learn from this experience?” She teaches that experiences give us two perspectives: either a really great and wonderful experience, or a really great and wonderful lesson. The key is to learn from the lessons, grow and move on to the next higher experience.

As I begin to once again rise, reflect on life’s lessons learned and God’s purpose for me, I will continue to share my Sisterlocks journey.

My prayer is that you will be inspired not only by photos of the external BlaqKofi, but you will be internally motivated to explore the greatness that lies within each of us as we continue this Natural Awakenings.

A Good Woman

A good woman is proud of herself.
She respects herself and others.
She is aware of who she is.

She neither seeks definition from the person she is with,
or does she expect them to read her mind.
She is quite capable of articulating her needs.

A good woman is hopeful. She is strong enough to make all her dreams come true. She knows love, therefore she gives love. She recognizes that her love has great value and must be reciprocated. If her love is taken for granted, it soon disappears.

A good woman has a dash of inspiration, a dabble of endurance. She knows that she will, at times, have to inspire others to reach the potential God gave them.
