Washed and conditioned Sisterlocks. Applied a few drops of Coconut oil while damp to seal in moisture. Air dry over night. Set with Caruso's (or any steam curlers). They are a quick way to dress up locks and only takes five minutes to set. By the time my makeup is done, the curlers are ready to come out. Shape locks gently with fingers....done. The freedom of Sisterlocks!

Note: Steam curlers are not effective when locks are in the "plump" stage.

Today, as I celebrate my 52nd birthday I wanted to share a heartfelt thanks to all of you who continue to visit Natural Awakenings and travel along my life journey. I am honored that after almost seven years, you still find my words and thoughts worth reading.

For those who post comments or email, your words and gestures do more for my spirit than you could ever imagine. And without fail, just when I think 3 years or 5 years or 7 years is enough blogging, someone reaches out to share how Natural Awakenings has impacted their Sisterlocks and life journey.

Each birthday, my lil sis would call me at 12 a.m. She always wanted to be the first to tell me happy birthday. Tonight, I share that special time with each of you. It's 12:01.

I am blessed by your support, encouragement and sisterhood.

SHEDDING LAYERS
A good friend and fellow Sisterlocker, MsP, left for her own personal Eat, Pray, Love journey. How liberating to shed layers that no longer serve us and unveil new ones that do. I am so happy for and proud of her. She inspires me...

A week before leaving she called to say she was thinking of cutting her shoulder length locks. "Will I be breaking some Sisterlocks sacred rule?," she asked half jokingly. I said, "you're locked - not locked up." I encouraged her to fully honor where her spirit was leading.

I reminded her that Sisterlocks has dispelled the "we can't grow our hair long" myth. And because we can, we have all the freedom to style our locks in any way - including cutting them. Afterall, they will grow back - it's hair.

So she began her new journey with a cute and versatile short cut courtesy of our fabulous friend and Consultant, Gigi who gave her a funky, vibrant outward expression of her inner newness. What freedom to be and do what is in alignment with truth!

LAYERS OF SISTERHOOD
Six months ago my eyes surveyed a room of friends and loved ones and sitting right up front was Gigi and her husband Eddy - right where I could see their faces and feel their love and energy as I stood to honor my lil sis, T at her Life Celebration. Their presence strengthened me.

Six months to the day, October 26, I sat in the closest seat in eyesight of my dear friend as she celebrated the life of her beloved Eddy, also taken by the unforgiving disease of cancer. I willed her strength on that day, just as I know she and Eddy had done for me a mere six months earlier. Gigi arranged a joyful Life Celebration that was so much like Eddy. I know that he was proud of his Queen.

She inspires me...

She first became my consultant, then my friend, my confidante, and my mentor, teaching me so much. I honestly don't know where I'd be without her gentle and conscious guidance. She is greatly responsible for the awakening of my truth and I'll love her forever for that gift.

Our sisterhood was ordained by the birth of her granddaughter, Hapi on my lockversary. We are further bound by our similar life experiences, even losing those most dear to our hearts exactly six months apart. And the layers of our sisterhood grows as we help each other face each day without them. Six and half years ago, I sat in Gigi's chair - I thought - simply to get Sisterlocks. Little did I know it would evolve into a lifestyle of self discovery - rather than a hairstyle.

LOCK LAYERS
Cutting my locks has always been emotional and difficult for me. I don't let anyone other than Gigi maintain my locks and I've never let her cut more than just bangs and dead ends. And even that was traumatic. I found it difficult to part with that which had become such a part of me.

Three days after Eddy's Life Celebration, I sat in Gigi's chair buoyed by MsP's bold life steps, and reminded of life's fleeting moments by T and Eddy - and for the first time said, "I'd like you to cut my locks. You have free reign. I won't question you - just maintain my length.

LAYERS OF INSPIRATION
I sat in Gigi's chair, inhaling deeply with each "snip" of the scissors and each "thud" of locks falling to the floor. It was as if part of me was being cut away. Anything living needs some pruning in order to continue healthy growth. Otherwise, the old, lifeless parts weigh down, slow down and sometimes even cuts down the possibility of newness. So often we hold onto that which should be released. Perhaps it's time for me to shed some old layers of hurt and grief and begin to live and love again.

Gigi placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, leaned over and said knowingly, it's ok - you can breath. I wasn't even aware of my held breath. I let out a long exhale and we both cracked up with laughter. I relaxed my shoulders and sat back in her chair - allowing myself to be vunerable - knowing that I'd be ok, regardless. I emerged with the perfect layered cut. It felt light, vibrant and free - so did I.

Thank you for the layers of inspiration MsP, Gigi, T and Eddy...as my Sisterlocks and I begin our next journey.

Growth

The more our Sisterlocks mature, the more we come to know them, learn them. As in life, as we learn we grow and as we grow we learn. I've been dong a lot of both.

My clients' monthly retightenings are a time of inexplicit rejuvenation, replenishment and growth - physically, spiritually and emotionally. We have such wonderful moments of sharing and connecting that's unique to each woman. With one it might be downright sister girl laughing and talking, with another discovering and sharing a movie or music.

For others our time is a safe place for tears to fall and locked words and emotions to freely flow and still with another there's a sharing of consciousness, politics, philosophy or history. My life is so much richer because of these women. I get to witness their growth and demonstrate mine. I am honored to provide a place and space for this Sisterlocks Sisterhood 'cause it's about the Locks AND the Sister.

Sharing Queen V, Sisterlocks client and friend. Locked by LaShaun out of Missouri a little over two years ago; I've had the pleasure of maintaining her locks up until she began self maintenance last year. For you DIY's it's important to see your Consultant for lock maintenance once or twice a year.

V is going through the "bunching" stage, an added challenge to retightenings for both the Consultant and DIY. Many Sisterlockers experience this budding phase. Including your's truly. V's thick, course hair and curl pattern while perfect for SL, causes her ends to bunch. Having to work the bunched end through the smaller rotation opening adds tension on the lock, so special care should be taken. This phase can be somewhat bothersome and very challenging to style. Yet, they reign beauty.

Her locks will eventually shrink to their mature size. Each maturation has it's own, natural timeframe. Her natural awakenings is unique to V. No two journeys, Sisterlocks or otherwise are identical.

I had the pleasure of retightening V, doing some lock maintenance and sharing space with her, finishing the evening with a fun photo shoot. (Thanks P for the lighting.)

Afterwards, V's locks rock! A spray bottle of water, a few drops of jojoba oil and lavender added moisture and a soothing scent during the retight.

Like a caterpillar struggling to free itself, V's same course, thick hair is maturing into an even more stunning head of Sisterlocks. Like the butterfly, it's beauty undeniable.

SL 6 Years

Sisterlocks washed with Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Aloe Shampoo. Conditioned with Organic Root Stimulator Oilve Oil Replenishing Conditioner. Towel dry followed by a generous hand full of Organic Stimulator Olive Hair Lotion paying particular attention ends. (I heavily condition and moisturize during each bi-weekly wash.) Locks were allowed to air dry naturally. With the help of our 100+ degree weather it didn't take long.

I love the feel of my Sisterlocks against my skin, running through my fingers - especially freshly washed locks. And I will admit, it's been kinda cool showering sans showercap this week. It was an added layer of freedom and I liked it!

This lock thang is so beautiful. Our locks just keep evolving for the better, each phase beautiful in its own right, adding yet another layer of knowledge and experience to our Natural Awakenings.

The Most Important Part of Sisterlocks

Queens! I have missed sharing with you. Been experiencing life - the ebbs and the flows. But, where there are valleys, there also are peaks. I been climbin! But this evening, it's just you and me - and Sisterlocks, of course.

I love the look and feel of my Sisterlocks. I love their flexibility and versatility. I love the freedom of washing and styling my own hair, riding with the windows down, getting in the water rather than watching from the sidelines. But, I cherish the Sisterlocks Sisterhood most. I've come to understand that the most important part of Sisterlocks is NOT the locks - it's the SISTER.

This weekend I got to experience it in abundance. My clients Monica, Kendra, Sandee, Maya and Venus came out to hear me speak at the Let's Talk About Hair forum in Oklahoma City. There were over forty women of every hue and hair texture sharing, learning and networking.

That's the SISTER in Sisterlocks.

Just when I was wondering if my blog was serving a purpose I received this email. It made my day!

"I just want to tell you how much I enjoy your blog. I have been learning a lot. I am not ready to lock yet but I am obsessed with your site! I just want you to know that many people are benefiting from your energy even if you don't always hear from them."

That's the SISTER in Sisterlocks.

Facebook friend and fellow Sisterlocks Consultant, Connie from L.A., helped me out with some Sisterlocks supplies. She was so kind and accommodating. I could tell that she sincerely wanted to help me. She even encouraged me to take some "me" time. The irony is, I've never even met her personally yet and still she reached out to me.

That's the SISTER in Sisterlocks.

My girl Venus, who I hadn't seen in over a year, drove two hours to see me. We got to sit down, grown folks style, Saturday night and share the way we used to. It was nice to exhale authentically...

That's the SISTER in Sisterlocks.

The Consultant/Client relationship is so special and intimate. I love my one-on-one time with my clients and I think they enjoy me also. My place is quaint and intimate, peaceful with smooth jazz or some Neo Soul (I been jammin' that new Ledisi lately) Old School, R&B or Gospel depending on the mood. But always good times of sharing like Angie, from Kansas, and I had on Saturday afternoon.

That's the SISTER in Sisterlocks.

My girl Sandee hooked a sister up with a Red Bull to help me get through my Saturday retights. After speaking that morning I was drained. What was I thinking, scheduling retights afterwards? I take good care of my clients and they care for me.

That's the SISTER in Sisterlocks.

Today, I retightened Tanisha. She has the most beautiful island accent. I could just sit and listen to her talk. We have great "Chi." I always look forward to sharing space with her because my girl is funny, deep and wise. The "Sister in Sisterlocks" was born this morning as a result of one our moments. She was selfless enough to allow me to share with you.

That's the SISTER in Sisterlocks...

The Sunday work day ended with a late brunch, lakeside with Belinda from Arkansas. Great food, great conversation, great client and great friend.

And that's only those I interacted with this weekend! My clients' support and the encouragement of my readers help me to continue to climb. I won't ever stop, despite the sometimes rugged terrain and it's comforting knowing I'm not alone.

I remember the rush of wanting my locks to drop and settle and grow long and look like someone else's. But I believe, it's not how fast or how long our Sisterlocks grow, but the SISTERS we become in the growing.

That's what's up....

Many of you asked if I colored her locks. She actually colored them herself at home. I only do Sisterlocks, nothing more.

She used Loreal's HiColor HiLights in Red.

Always consult your Locktician before coloring. She will let you know if your locks are mature enough. Color tends to dry out locks so consistent moisturizing is a MUST!

My mother, sister and I truly appreciate all of your love, support and kind words of encouragement during the loss of our beloved Theresa. She had a beautiful Life Celebration service on Saturday, April 30. I had the honor of delivering her eulogy. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever done and my proudest moment. I am certain that she was smiling. My niece, her 10-year old daughter showed the same determination and resilience as her mother. I was so proud of her and my entire family.

A heartfelt thank you to the beautiful Sisterlocks Queens whose presence at T's service helped to fortify and strengthen me: My consultant and dear friend, Gigi and husband; my first client, Monica who traveled all the way from Oklahoma; Creyole who dashed over from Dallas after learning of T's passing only two hours prior to her service; and my good friend M, who came out of her bat cave to support me (wink). What awesome friends.

During a very difficult day my friend and client, Monica shared this with me,

"Earlier I was reading your blog and the love that people are pouring out to you. One person said the “whole community” was lifting you up. Girl draw on that. There are people all over the world praying for you. Hold on to that."

And hold to your words of encouragement, I have...

My mother sends her thank you as well. She lost her baby and she is suffering. You will never know how much your support has ministered to our hearts.

The Importance of Retightenings

The key to a beautiful head of healthy Sisterlocks - regular and consistent retightenings. At almost 6 years, my Sisterlocks remain on a 4 week retightening schedule.

I recently went 8 weeks between retightenings due to unforeseen circumstances and a winter blizzard. Not only did my locks not look their best, but they were susceptible to damage and even lock loss.

Here I am at about four weeks out...(still manageable)

Six weeks out, I resorted to pulling them back....(braid out)

Seven weeks out - pinning them back....(lots of new growth)

Feeling old and not so pretty. I gave up my "no more color" vow, colored and did a twist out. The color came out great, but now my locks are frizzy, I have "big hair" and my new growth is even more apparent.

At eight weeks, I have a small fro growing. My locks are difficult to finger comb without snagging and they are fuzzy....(iphone pic at 8 weeks on retightening day - FINALLY!)

Feeling pretty again!!!! I can run my fingers through my hair. My head feels wonderful and my locks are revived! (Post retightening)

Hair grows an average of .5 inches a month. The more new growth the more hair that is susceptible to pulling and snagging when finger combing or pulling back. At this point, it is very easy to snag a lock and inadvertently pull it out.

Apply the least amount of tension possible when in need of a retight. Avoid pulling locks into tight pony tails, banding or tying up tightly, etc. This added tension causes stress on the locks and can lead to lock loss. Finger comb gently and slowly to avoid pulling and snagging locks.

I actually lost a lock during this retightening session. Between the loose hair, added tension and color the new growth became fragile and broke off.

Waiting 8 weeks caused my retightening session to last twice as long and cost twice as much. The process was uncomfortable as the new growth had to be untangled and separated. I had a serious headache afterwards (laughing, but true). From the Consultant's perspective, it's no joy doing those extended retights. It is very labor intensive.

Sisterlocks are "low maintenance" not "no maintenance." So feel confident when your Consultant reminds you of the importance of regular and consistent retightenings. How soon we forget those weekly or bi-weekly day long camp outs at the salon for the creamy crack. The return on your investment of 2-3 hrs a month equals a beautiful, healthy, vibrant head of hair. You won't save time or money by extending your retightenings - but you will save your Sisterlocks.

Expressions of Love

I got the pleasure of spending time with my Queens and their entire family on Saturday. I always look forward to seeing their excited, beaming faces. The girls simply could not wait to present me with a Valentine's balloon, candy, card and, of course lots of hugs. They radiate such authentic joy. We should all be as fortunate as these two beautiful expressions of love.

Mom was getting some tires put on her car recently when she was recognized by a Natural Awakenings reader. Being very shy and introverted, she relayed feeling uncomfortable with the covert stares this sister kept giving her. Finally the lady walked over and said, "do you know BlaqKofi?"

I can imagine the big smile that came across mom's face as she said, "Yes, that's my daughter." The sister went on to share that she recognized mom from my blog and how much she admired our locks. Mom couldn't wait to get home to call me and share "the most wonderful thing that happened today." It was so cool hearing her refer to me as BlaqKofi for the first time.

Last week while trekking through DFW Airport to catch a connecting flight I noticed a young lady's stare. As I approached she said, excuse me what's your name. Before I could answer she said, you're "BlaqKofi with the locks from online!" Ironically, she wasn't natural, but said she had been researching Sisterlocks and was a frequent visitor to Natural Awakenings. Our sisterhood continues to expand and mom continues to enjoy the freedom and beauty of Sisterlocks and her newfound celebrity.

Mom's Style:
Washed and conditioned locks with Avalon Lemon Clarifying Shampoo and Conditioner. Deep conditioned with Sisterlocks Moisture Treatment for 30 minutes. Rinsed and towel dried hair. Set while damp on small Soft Spike Curlers, rolling hair at an angle for spiral curls. Curlers remained in over night. Remove when completely dry, do not finger comb.

Style last 2-3 weeks. As curls relax, gently loosen with fingers for a full soft look.

A Time When You Finally Get It

A time comes in your life when you finally get it…When in the midst of all your fears and insanity you stop dead in your tracks and somewhere the voice inside your head cries out – ENOUGH! Enough fighting and crying or struggling to hold on. And , like a child quieting down after a blind tantrum, your sobs begin to subside, you shudder once or twice, you blink back your tears and through a mantle of wet lashes you begin to look at the world through new eyes because you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired.

This is your awakening. You realize that it’s time to stop hoping and waiting for something to change or for happiness, safety and security to come galloping over the next horizon. You come to terms with the fact that he is not Prince Charming and you are not Cinderella and that in the real world there aren’t always fairytale endings (or beginnings for that matter) and that any guarantee of “happily ever after” must begin with you and in the process a sense of serenity is born of acceptance.

You awaken to the fact that you are not perfect and not everyone will always love, appreciate or approve of who or what you are…and that’s OK. They are entitled to their own views and opinions. You learn the importance of loving and championing yourself and in the process a sense of new found confidence is born of self-approval.

You stop bitching and blaming other people for the things they did to you (or didn’t do for you) and you learn that the only thing you can really count on is the unexpected. You learn that people don’t always say what they mean or mean what they say and that not everyone will always be there for you and that it’s not always about you. So, you learn to stand on your own and to take care of yourself and in the process a sense of safety and security is born of self-reliance.

You stop judging and pointing fingers and you begin to accept people as they are and to overlook their shortcomings and human frailties and in the process a sense of peace and contentment is born of forgiveness. You realize that much of the way you view yourself, and the world around you, is a result of all the messages and opinions that have been ingrained into your psyche. And you begin to sift through all the crap you’ve been fed about how you should behave, how you should look and how much you should weigh, what you should wear, where you should shop and what you should drive, how and where you should live and what you should do for a living, who you should sleep with, who you should marry and what you should expect of a marriage, the importance of having and raising children or what you owe your parents.

You learn to open up to new worlds and different points of view. And you begin reassessing and redefining who you are and what you really stand for. You learn the difference between wanting and needing and you begin to discard the doctrines and values you’ve outgrown, or should never have bought into to begin with and in the process you learn to go with your instincts.

You learn that it’s not your job to save the world. You learn to distinguish between guilt and responsibility and the importance of setting boundaries and learning to say no. You learn that the only cross to bear is the one you choose to carry and that martyrs get burned at the stake.

Then you learn about love, romantic love and familial love. How to love, how much to give in love, when to stop giving and when to walk away. You learn not to project your needs or your feelings onto a relationship. You learn that you will not be more beautiful, more intelligent, more lovable or important because of the man on your arm or the child that bears your name.

You learn to look at relationships as they really are and not as you would have them be. You stop trying to control people, situations and outcomes. You learn that just as people grow and change so it is with love…and you learn that you don’t have the right to demand love on your terms…just to make you happy. And you learn that alone does not mean lonely…and you look in the mirror and come to terms with the fact that you will never be a size 5 or a perfect 10 and you stop trying to compete with the image inside your head.

You also stop working so hard at putting your feelings aside. You find ways to get what you think you deserve and that sometimes bad things happen to unsuspecting, good people. On these occasions you learn not to personalize things. You learn that the Universe isn’t punishing you or failing to answer your prayers. It’s just life happening.

And you learn to deal with evil in its most primal state – the ego! You learn that negative feelings such as anger, envy and resentment must be understood and redirected or they will suffocate the life out of you and poison the universe that surrounds you. You learn to admit when you are wrong and to building bridges instead of walls.

Slowly, you begin to take responsibility for yourself by yourself. You make yourself a promise to never betray yourself and to never ever settle for less than your heart’s desire.

Finally, with courage in your heart and with the positive energy of the Universe you take a stand, you take a deep breath and begin to design and live the life you want to live as best you can.

Also featuring my newest client; a beautiful, deep sister from the Islands with an accent I can't get enough of. Her install was a personal record, 12 hours with about 5 inches of hair. We had an awesome time bonding this weekend and she loved her Sisterlocks. (Well, of course!)

I continue to be so immensely blessed by the women I have the privilege of meeting through Sisterlocks. You inspire and motivate me. Your support strengthens my resolve to continue this work I'm called to do. And our bond gives me a sense of family.

B Day - Keepin' On

I had fun celebrating with family this weekend. They showed me so much love and keep me crackin' up! Church on Sunday with mom and sis. I was surprised by the number of sisters aware of Natural Awakenings and my Sisterlocks work. Their support touched me giving me a sense of personal pride.

It was nice being in the comfort of familiarity - home.

You know I had to have my Sisterlocks correct for da church-crowd-who-ain't-seen-me-in-a-minute. And da locks was rockin'! Gigi hooked me up with the retite on Saturday. My locks seem to have grown an inch since my last visit! I wore them in a soft, loose Caruso curl set. They had bounce and body and wuz all hangin' down my back and stuff...lol! My apologies, no pic to share. I know - a first, huh?

I used to get so bothered when people I hadn't seen in a while would approach me with, "girl, you're so little. You've lost so much weight." When, in fact, I've been this same size for most of my life. I now realize what they are truly saying is, "I don't feel good about myself." So I smile and move on to more positive energy. Praying that they will one day see a reflection in the mirror they can love. It's so wonderful to be in a place of empowerment, over my thoughts, my feelings and my actions. No one can make you feel bad without your permission.

Today is my birthday and I feel beautiful inside and out.

Sister Update

My sister's locks are progressing beautifully at three months. Her soft hair is naturally curly, as opposed to kinky like my own. This makes for quick drying time and easy wash-and-go styling. Her joy at experiencing her natural, authentic self radiates from within outwards. It's made a noticeable difference that shows in every facet of her life. I'm so proud of her.

Thanks to many of you who reach out to share how my blog has helped you to awaken - naturally and internally. Lifes demands, at this time, prevents me from answering each of you personally. Know that I feel your positive energy! Pass it on to another sister.

The weekend weather was gorgeous. Ride-with-the-windows-down-tunes-flowin'-kind-of-weather.

As we approach the season of thanks. I reflected on the warmth, love and laughter of Maya, Rene, Tarsha, Karen, Marsha, LaJuana, Roberta and Belinda, awesome clients who I serviced this week. They show me so much love - from a homemade sweet potato pie, to a thoughtful breakfast or lunch. All uniquely, good people who make me smile and laugh. They are my family away from family and treat me as such. I am thankful for each.

It was a beautiful 75 degree day today. I took advantage of the weather with a photo shoot and a long, peaceful, restorative walk at the lake. My favorite place to be - on or near water. It's calmness creates calm and nurtures my spirit. I am thankful for the Universe's beauty. (Click photos for greater details. These guys are amazing athletes.)

I drove home with the windows down. Sisterlocks flowin' in the wind, music jammin'. Thankful for life's simplicities and all of my blessings including those of you who continually visit Natural Awakenings. Happy Thanksgiving.

Getting to Happy

Enjoying a rare Saturday afternoon to myself. It's a gorgeous day - the sun is shining - a perfect 75 degrees and I feel good. About to settle down with a glass of wine and my favorite author, Terry McMillan. Last night I purchased Getting To Happy her sequel to Waiting to Exhale. I'm anxious to see what Bernadine, Gloria, Savannah and Robin have been up to for the past 15 years. Can you believe it's been that long since they entered our lives and forever changed African American literature.

I remember reading Waiting to Exhale for the first time. I couldn't put it down. It was like chillin' with my home girls. I had never connected culturally with a book on this level before and the WTE soundtrack is still da bomb. McMillan immediately became one of my favorite authors. I support her by purchasing everything she writes to add to my library collection. I'm happy to see her rebound - hopefully - she's Getting to Happy as well. Isn't that what we all seek?

My life is really full right now. I am blessed with an awesome family and great friends who love, encourage and support me. I have come to realize that everyone in my life is there for a purpose - rather that be a reason or a season. I am grateful for the lessons. This October has been full of family, friendships - new and old - challenges, learning, clarity, healing and personal growth. My present time is limited, but I wanted to reach out and share some Blaq Life with you. I'll be back with the visual and cerebral real soon.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As most of you know my baby sis has battled this invasive disease for the past five years. Last week I had the honor of traveling with her to Houston, Texas and the MD Anderson Cancer Center for her periodic exams and testing. After two full, tense days of uncertainty, we were able to drive home in celebration. For the first time in five years, there were no signs of cancer! My Shero.

DFW OG Sisterlocks - In October 2005, a group of ladies met through Yahoo!LockItUp, gathered together in Dallas with something in common - Sisterlocks. Over the past five years we have developed a bond of true friendship. Last weekend, those of us who could make it, gathered in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex to celebrate five years of Sisterlock'dom and sisterhood. More photos and details to follow.

Natural Hair Care Forum - I was the guest speaker this past weekend at a Natural Hair Care Forum here in Oklahoma City. It was powerful to look around the room and see all the beautiful hues of skin tone, hair textures and natural styles. It was a wonderful Saturday of natural support, knowledge and bonding. I was honored to be invited to share with this group.

My Highest Honor (Client Profile)

At the height of the Haitian earthquake relief efforts I remember seeing a short clip of "families at the airport, all anxious to meet their new adoptees." The camera pans the crowd and there was not one person of color! My first thought - how will they possbly care for their hair? I didn't doubt that they'd be loved, but understanding the complexities of our hair in its natural state, its care and maintenance, well that's a totally different level of knowledge. Most African-Americans aren't even that conscious - yet. Will these parents think chemically processed hair is a "natural state?" It bothered me...
And the Universe responded.

A few months later I was privileged to lock two beautiful Ethiopian sisters new to America. I present to you QueenN and QueenM, my first "girls" Sisterlocks installs.

They have beautiful accents and I love hearing them talk. They've quickly grasped English thanks to the patient tutoring of their parents. (The little one refers to long hair as "big hair." I just love hearing her talk about my "big hair.") During the installs, mom did flash card activities - letters, words, colors and shapes. Read books was read to...and...I've now watched every children's video there is. The Little Mermaid, Thumbalina, all of the Shrek's, Toy Story, Ice Age, The Frog Princess, etc. Their favorite - Mary Poppins. A movie I had never viewed til now. The installs were a month a part. And you guessed it. The little one liked the same movies as her sister! So I got to view them twice. It's a joy watching them innocently laugh out loud or emotionally respond to whatever's happening on the screen.

The girls are blessed with parents who absolutely love and adore them - the biblical kind of love - patient, kind, giving, selfless. They couldn't be in a more loving, nurturing environment. I've had the pleasure of spending time with both parents. I asked the one question that always crosses my mind when I hear of International Adoptions - why a particular country? In this case, Ethiopia, specifically?

"We wanted to adopt where the need was greatest. I always instinctively knew I would have daughters from Ethiopia. I can't tell you how I knew. I just felt it." ~The Girls' Mom

And the Universe responded.

My second question, "why Sisterlocks?" RESEARCH. Everything she read indicated that Sisterlocks was the healthest option for her girls' hair and would give them the one thing they wanted most - long hair. (They have that in common with 99.9% of us, right?) I remember the way they looked at me, examining my locks with curiosity during our consultation. A special moment.

I actually referred the mother to someone in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. She emailed back and said with distance being the same both ways, she'd prefer that I lock the girls. She said my name kept coming up in her research. I was a little uncertain about little girls sitting for the long install time; but they both did an excellent job of hanging with Blaq. Kudos to mom for coming prepared with items to keep them occupied and lots of fruits and snacks.

I've learned there's a network of International Adoption support groups for every particular mixture of adoptive families - blogs and websites where adoptive parents can gain insight, support, recommendations, referrals and discuss things such as hair care. The adoption process can take quite some time. This gave the girls' mother a year and more to learn as much as she could about natural hair and its care.

Since getting to know this family, I can view that same news clip with a different perspective. I thank them for being open to my inquiring mind. Look forward to more features on the girls as their locks mature and they adapt to American life.

In the meantime, when QueenN and QueenM look at me as an African-American woman, I want them to see WHAT their locks can become AND the limitless possibilities of WHO they can become ~ that is my highest honor.

Who knows why the Universe brought us all together. Perhaps it was simply as natural for the girls to get Sisterlocks - as it was for me to lock them - as it was for their parents to adopt them...

Sisterlocks - A Journey, Not a Destination

Locking ~ Locking takes patience. Give your Sisterlocks time to mature - actually you have no choice in the matter. So why not embrace the journey and become engaged in the process.

Length ~Your Sisterlocks will "drop" and you'll have your length sooner than you realize. Love them where they are and nurture them. You'll have plenty of time to reminisce about how cute and funky your short locks were. They will grow and eventually become all that you want them to be while becoming distinctly you.

Educate ~ It doesn't happen over night. Locking is a process, made more beautiful when you are educated about the process. No excuses. There's a multitude of information available, not to mention Natural Awakenings. Knowing what to expect relieves the anxiety of wondering "Why my hair isn't like so and so's? Each head, each sister, each journey is uniquely different. Experiment and find styles that work for you at each stage. For it will soon pass and you'll be on to the next - just like life - a journey, not a destination.

Mom...Now...Sis

I am proud to introduce my biological sister, "G", the latest of my family to cross over to natural freedom. She came to visit me and receive her birthday present from Big Sis - Sisterlocks!

My sister has worn wigs for seven years. Like many African American women, she suffered hair damage and loss from, what we now know are harmful chemicals. Wearing wigs simply became a way of life for her. And while she truly sported them and they were attractive, it wasn't her hair. On a trip home I discovered she had a full head of beautiful, natural hair with only limited reminants of the damage.

This is how she looked when she arrived in Oklahoma.

And this is how she left Oklahoma - sporting her own head of beautiful, natural Sisterlocks.

Pics of her installation follow. Hair styled by spritzing with water, braiding and rolling ends for a krinkly look. She had her hair dyed this beautiful color by a professional colorist two weeks prior to locking. As the color begins to wear off and her locks mature, she'll have a beautiful two-tone look. I'm so proud of her for celebrating her natural beauty. Afterall, she's BlaqKofi's sister!

Most of you know that I celebrated my five year loc'versary by getting my locks layered. I wasn't really nervous about it, but the end result did take some getting used to. Above, three looks: Braidout, Caruso Steam Roller Set, Soft Spike Curler set.

The Pros of the layered cut:

My head feels much lighter. Although Sisterlocks don't pull, I did have a lot of density which was very hot in the summer and took additional washing and drying time.
The cut is a little more age appropriate for a 50 year old woman
I wear my hair down more often
The bangs and layers keep the hair from falling into my face
My high pony's fall perfectly, rather than being weighed down

The Cons of the layered cut:

I kind of miss my "signature" density

I had to learn new ways to style my hair

Pulling hair back can be a challenge because of the bangs and layers

The cut did away with my highlighted ends causing my hair to look darker.

Overall, I'm happy with the cut and bangs. Now I have another 5 years to let them grow back!

What Sparsity? (Client Feature)

This particular client had the sparsest hair of anyone I have transitioned. She'd suffered hair loss due to perms, microbraids and illness. We had extensive discussions regarding her decision to lock. I felt assured she was ready. From day one she put on her makeup, earrings and confidently rocked her Sisterlocks like the tall, beautiful, dark Nubian Queen she is. Check out her volume a mere three months later. After I did her comparison shot, I had to go back to my records and confirm for myself that it had only been three months. Her hair is healthier, thicker, fuller and growing. What!? What!? What sparsity!? Sparse this - Sisterlocks!

Workin' Da LocHawk (Client Feature)

Check out my client workin' her cute and stylish LocHawk. I only take credit for the retightening.

She shared with me how she created this look to pass on to my readers. You simply need four or five ponytail holders. Gather the hair into four separate sections. Secure each section with ponytail holder. Arrange hair by gently pulling loose hair to each side of the pontail holder. Arrange front hair forward. Put on some slammin' earrings and you're done! Five minutes, tops! A great style for medium length locks.

The True BlaqKofi

We've shared each stage of my Sisterlocks transition over the past five years. Documented for the world to see - growth, color, highlights, damage, recovery, products and countless styles. But what you couldn't see was the transformation occurring within me.

A very introverted friend asked recently, "how can you expose yourself so openly to the Blog world and beyond?" I shared that writing, for me, is cathartic. Sharing releases it's power - and relinquishes me. Not always comfortable or easy. Sometimes I look back on some of the things I've written over the years and I surprise myself. But I've learned that truth and freedom go hand and hand.

I spoke at a small women's conference recently in my home town of Fort Worth. It was a special evening for me. I was about to introduce and share the true BlaqKofi publicly for the first time. I was caught off guard by several members of my church in attendance, including someone who had hurt me with words over five years before. Their presence shook my resolve, making the evening even more self challenging. These women knew me, or at least thought they did. But there was no turning back at that point.

Afterwards, buoyed by my freedom of self- disclosure, I privately shared with the sister how her words had deeply hurt me those many years ago. I told her that she probably didn't even remember the occurance, but that is has remained with me. (Often the person we deem wronged us, is oblivious of our perception and is going about their life - not giving us a passing thought. Yet the tumor remains, devouring us internally, slowly, stealing positive energy and resources.)

Chuch Member: "I didn't realize that my words hurt you. I'm sorry if they did. I've always admired you. What I actually meant to say was that you're always so together, you seem so confident and happy, yet humble. Like you have it all together and when I saw you cry, I thought wow! She's just like me. She has problems too."

Blaq: "You just witnessed me stand before a room full of women and share that while I was sitting in church Sunday after Sunday "looking like I have it altogether" I was dying and hurting inside. Don't assume to know someone based on size or hair or locks or clothes or shoes or position. Or because they don't outwardly express emotions in the same manner as others. None of that exempts me from life's challenges. I struggle just like everyone else. My spirit wouldn't let me leave without speaking to you tonight and releasing this. I had no idea she admired me. Choosing instead to listen to the negative chatter in my head fueled by my own self doubt. I didn't feel good about myself, how could/would someone admire me?

Sisters, I'm just plain-ole BlaqKofi from the Stop-Six neighborhood of Fort Worth, Texas. I'm no different than anyone else traversing this life. In fact most of you would be quite surprised to know the road traveled to the destination of the true BlaqKofi.

The past five years have been my most life defining. Forever altering my internal image of self and setting me on the path to my higher purpose.

"Old, destructive patterns of behavior, compound our mistakes. "If we won't face things voluntarily, the situation usually gets worse and worse until at some point, the results of our past choices are staring us in the face and we're forced to deal with them. In my case, those results were so obvious and so life-changing there was no way possible to ignore them."

Excerpts from Lisa Nichols book, "No Matter What!" A must read for any sister desiring to reach her full potential, battling inner-self, self doubt, low self-esteem, mental or physical abuse, spirituality or the flesh. Insightful, authentic and empowering from a sister's perspective. From a round-da-way-girl perspective. From Blaq's perspective. It's almost as if she chronicled my life. "No Matter What!" has proven helpful and inspiring beyond measure. In her book she also shares her physical and spiritual transition to naturalness and self-acceptance. I've often stated this journey far transcends the external physical appearance. I'm gonna meet that sister one day and train with her. I own the audio and the book. I've shared many a morning with the voice of Lisa Nichols inviting me to "step into my greatness."

So here I am, beginning the next new phase of this journey. All that was required of me was to begin "to stand in that powerful yet humble place of self-acceptance and finally show the world who I am: unadulterated, unrestricted, and totally free." In doing so, I uncovered my life purpose:

To inspire, motivate, encourage and empower women to their full life potential through knowledge and enlightment.

I'm presently transitioning from my full-time work to my passion - teaching other women self honesty and love by sharing my personal story while acquiring the training and certification to provide women with the tools and knowledge to identify and address their core issues.

Lisa states it this way, "we need to identify and own the habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that don't serve you and then to be willing to honor and celebrate yourself in prepartion for shifting those patterns." Once that self-actualization occurs, there are no limitations to our individual greatness. The proof is evidenced in the true BlaqKofi!

Celebrating Blaq's 5 Yr Aniv

I have received an over abundance of love and support, publicly and privately. I love y’all for making the “Blaq connection.” The “Can Anyone Hear Me?” post was written tongue-in-cheek. When what I actually wanted to say was:

“Life’s challenging right now-but fulfilling, scary yet exhilarating, painful and at the same time healing. And I need some positive energy flowing my way.” Asking for what we want or need, unfamiliar terrain for many of us. So forgive me for coercing you, tongue-in-cheek.

Today I celebrate five years of Sisterlocks freedom and the five year anniversary of Natural Awakenings.  A work of passion that has evolved into the true essence of me - celebrating the things I enjoy most. It has been my privilege to share this journey with you thus far. Those of you who been down from the jump...mad, mad love.

Your feedback is fuel for my mind and my soul. So feel free to share when something I write, or a photo or a melodic sound connects with your inner you. When we share, we empower others to do the same and free ourselves in doing so.

The next phase of  Natural Awakenings?  Working to make “free” the majority – not the minority.

And of course, more BlaqKofi and Sisterlocks.

Y'all awfully quiet out there and Blaq's feelin' a little lonely and under appreciated. Back-in-da-day, ya'll used to holla at me all the time, leave comments, at-a-girls!, you-go-girls!, I-feel-you-sistuh! and all kinds of positive reinforcement. Now y'all treatin' me a like a bad relationship. Drop-by-do-yo-thang-and-leave.

Do you like my pics, my music, my vibe, my information...Tell a sistuh sumthin'! Y'all have fallen into a five-year-slump. Is it time for Blaq to call-it-quits like Simon Cowell? Shall I quietly go into the blog abyss? Am I played out like an eight-track?

Seriously, I love hearing from everyone. It inspires and motivates me to continue to write and to post more often. My sons got me a Nikon flash to go with my camera for Mother's Day. The results of just playing around with the timer, new flash and my Sisterlocks below.

Style: Washed locks, allowed to air dry. I randomly threw in a few Soft Spikes with lots of hair on each to give locks loose body and curl. The wonderful Gigi retightened my hair the following day. The results - locks that look and feel fabulous!

And my beautiful sister Teresa, who is well on her way to recovery, despite the gloomy outcome the physicians were predicting after a 7.5 hour surgery to remove a large cancerous tumor. With or without hair - she remains a regal, beautiful queen. Seeing her smile, hearing her laughter and being with all of my family made this one of the best Mother's Days ever!

A heartfelt thank you to all of you who emailed, prayed and lifted me, T and my family during this time. A special thank you to my prayer warrior clients - Marsha, Darlene, Roberta, Monica and Shawna.

The True Cost of Sisterlocks ~ A Blaq Perspective

Macolm and I took a sunset walk at the lake today. The weather was perfect – aided by a light breeze that caressed my skin and gently set my locks in motion, to-n-fro. I thought, what a wonderful feeling. A feeling of pride. A feeling of self. SISTERLOCKS.

Several of my clients have mentioned a LockItUp thread where someone questioned the cost of Sisterlocks. Not an altogether unfamiliar subject. Apparently a consultant replied rather bluntly sighting, among other things, the job’s physical demands.

Divide the installation cost, by the install hours and complimentary follow-up time to get your Consultant’s hourly installation rate. The relevance of that hourly rate depends on your personal perspective. Some seem to think they are paying for a hairstyle of which Sisterlocks is not. Nor is Sisterlocks a fad. I define Sisterlocks as a permanent transition from one state to another – hair, body, mind and spirit.

Can you truly attach monetary value to a personal freedom never known? Or the bond that develops between like-minded sisters? Or the self awareness that emerges along with your growing locks?

I know some of you just gotta put a dollar to it…ok, how bout this? Savings from the products you no longer need to buy…hair purchases…installation costs…installation hours… removal costs and time...hours gained from the all-day beauty shop experience...wigs and other accessories between take down and “gurl-my-head lookin’-bad" days.

Repeat and pay…repeat and pay...repeat and pay...repeat and pay...repeat and pay... repeat and pay…repeat and pay...Two to three of these repetitions easily covers the cost of a Sisterlocks installation. Welcome to your new and improved "Natural Awakenings." I intended the makeover to coincide with my blog and Sisterlocks 5 year anniversary this June 10. However, what began as a trial run this morning turned into a day long work of passion.

I took the site down temporarily today while I worked out some glitches and continued my learning curve. I was touched to receive emails from so many of you inquiring about my blog, requesting that I bring it back on line soon. Although Natural Awakening is not completely where I'd like it to be, in light of and in respect of your requests, Blaq's back!

I'll ask your patience as I continue to refine the site. Some of the links may need repairing, fonts and colors changed and the layout will be rearranged slightly. But all of the historical information you've come to rely on remains intact.

For those of you who requested that I bring the music back - it's here. The iPod functions just as a real iPod does. If you'd prefer not to hear the music, simply click pause. You may click the Menu button to select specific titles.

My goal is to provide a beautiful, clean, user friendly, information, entertainment and resource tool in Natural Awakenings.

Just Because We Don't Have To - Part II

In the hushed tones of a golf announcer: "When last we left, BlaqKofi was on the precipice of deciding the fate of this curl set before her upcoming retightening session. Let's see how this drama plays out..."

Reader Denise called it, "Of course your conscious made you wash before your next retightening." She's right. I did, and here are the results clean, styled, retightened locks.

Style: Braid Out

Washed locks, separated and towel dried. Braided locks into about 15-20 sections. Used fewer locks in smaller sections to assists with drying time. Set braids on Soft Spike curlers to give the ends a more manicured look.

Left braids and SS in over night. Following morning, removed SS, took braids down (the smaller braids made for a more time consuming process. You want to carefully handle locks when unbraiding, especially younger locks. A client was braiding her younger locks too tightly, causing slippage when unbraiding.) The smaller sections resulted in a tighter crinkle pattern.

One week later, I'm looking tired after a full day of retightening my clients, but the set still looks nice.

Remember, just because we don't have to, doesn't mean that we shouldn't. I'm on a two week wash rotation now. We can always find a way to do that which we are committed to. And I'm committed to Sisterlocks!

Just Because We Don't Have To, Doesn't Mean That We Shouldn't - Part I

I had an epiphany recently, brought on partly by guilt and embarrassment. A few months ago, I felt compelled to apologize to my loctician, Nycole, for "not washing" my hair prior to my retightening appointment. (Yes, BlaqKofi broke a Sisterlocks commandment!) After all, my hair didn't smell, there was no flakiness and most importantly, my locks still looked good.

The following month, she said, your scalp's a little dry in some areas. I sheepishly said, "well, I've been so busy, I haven't had a chance to wash them. I get home so late and I don't want to go to bed with wet locks." (Here was BlaqKofi giving the same excuses my clients give me.) She replied in her characteristically, upfront manner, "that's what you said last month." Inside, I felt my self shrinking in her chair with embarrassment - but she was right.

My sets can last 4 weeks or more or until I wash. Because my locks still look good and aren't weighed down with chemicals and products - I'm less concerned with washing them as often, particularly with a full-time job, a growing Sisterlocks business, a husband, a sick sister and a family who needs me. All legitimate excuses, but nevertheless, excuses.

Nycole's gentle nudge, reminded me that just because we don't have to wash as often, doesn't mean that we shouldn't. Not washing can cause the scalp's natural oils to be blocked, and unable to lubricate the hair shaft. As a result, hair can become dry and brittle. Washing stimulates the scalp, natural oils and promotes growth. Additionally, water is the best moisturizer for natural hair and Sisterlocks love water.

Mother nature gave me just the opportunity I needed to pamper my tresses. Snowed in for a four day weekend. I gave my locks a long luxurious wash and deep condition. Rolling diagonally on bendable curlers for "Shirley Temple" curls I left them in all day and overnight. Here's the untouched results after removing the curlers (and me sans make-up. But hey, I was snowed in!)

I eventually had to leave the house. Here I am ready for work three days later. I partially loosened the curls pulling them back, securing with a claw.

For bed I pulled them up, protecting the curls and adding fullness the next morning. (You can see that I need a retightening.)

I traveled to Texas four days later for my son's birthday celebration - and my set was still rockin!

I must admit, I do enjoy my locks more after a wash. They feel and look even better than usual with a natural sheen and that fresh hair smell.

I returned home on Sunday. My next retightening appointment with Nycole a mere two days away and yet I still had a head full of beautiful curls.

Simple & Economical Maintenance Tools

Check out some of my favorite, simple and economical maintenance tools. My beautiful granddaughter suggested that I allow her to dry my Sisterlocks. But, here are some other ideas you may want to try.

Nail Scrub Brush - Cost $1. You've seen it and used it, I'm sure at the nail salon. But for Sisterlocks? Yes! I use it to smooth those pesky fine hairline hairs. I run water over the small brush and gently smooth my hairline for a nice manicured look.

Shower Cap - Cost $1+ - WalMart. How do I maintain my styles and sets? I shower in this shower cap which is large and sturdy enough to hold all of my Sisterlocks.

Soc - $2.99 - During my first 4 lock years, I rarely covered my hair at night. Of late, I've begun to use this "budget" loc soc that I discovered either at Wal-Mart or the local corner hair supply store. It protects my locks from lint and other debris, protects them from friction as I sleep and prevents me from rolling over on them and pulling during the night. The soc also helps the fine hairline hairs to lay flat.

Simple and economical. Because it's natural to be natural!

Happy New Year to all of the beautiful Nubian queens and kings who honor me by stopping by Natural Awakenings. I'm grateful for the positive feedback and encouragement you continue to send my way. It tells me that my message is being heard and felt. Those diehard NA fans understand that the message is much deeper than natural hair freedom and Sisterlocks.

It's been four and half years of Sisterlocks blogging. Each year I think, "this is the year that I'll stop." But with each day, month, client, enlightenment, obstacle, challenge, pick-myself-up, get-back-in-da-race, look-within experience, I find more to share with you, more that I feel compelled to share with you. I'm excited about 2010, like no other year.

I've noticed a recent increase in the number of sisters writing BlaqKofi with questions regarding their locks or locking situations. My first response is always, "have you discussed this with your consultant?"

Because crossing over to naturalness can be scary and somewhat uncertain, I seek to establish a comfortable atmosphere for clients to candidly discuss their natural hair transition - starting with our first contact. This is reinforced through our dialogue during the consultation, installation and follow up visit. Why? Because I'm passionate about Sisterlocks and guiding others to the freedom of naturalness.
“Passion is something within you that provides the continual enthusiasm, focus, and energy you need to succeed. But unlike feel-good motivation derived from external sources, true passion has a more spiritual nature. It comes from within."

“The Success Principles”

What Questions Should I Ask the Consultant?
I’m often asked and often see this question on line, “what questions should I ask during the consultation.” The typical responses are: “How long have they been doing Sisterlocks? Number of clients? Pricing? Ask to see photos of their clients. Retightening fees, etc.

Ask a Better Question
While this basic information is important, I suggest you ask a better question. Other than a quality product, service and locking experience, THE most determining factor between one consultant and another should be: do I feel comfortable in this person’s presence and environment? Is this someone I would want to establish a relationship with? Would I want to spend 3-4 hours a month with this person?

Pricing

You’ll notice that I didn’t include price as one of the determining factors. Most consultants in a geographical region will have similar pricing. I remind you, that you get what you pay for. I’d gladly pay extra to be in a comfortable environment with someone I trust and enjoy. If there is a large disparity in price, ask questions to determine why.

Limited Selections

Not every region has the luxury of multiple consultants from which to choose. Some, states – like my new home of Oklahoma – had no trainees or consultants until I became certified in March 2008. (We now have two Certified Consultants, (a warm welcome to Nycole!) and two trainees. I have clients from Arkansas and Kansas because they have few if any Consultant options. This scenario makes the Consultant selection even more important – because you are investing travel time and cost each month. Some choose to travel to receive quality service in a comfortable environment with a Consultant they enjoy.

Do Your Homework

After having your basic questions answered, and by the way, do your homework first. You should know the answers to the basics prior to arriving at the consultation. Otherwise, how will you know if you’re getting accurate information? And, if the information you receive doesn’t jive with your research and what’s documented on the official Sisterlocks website – ASK QUESTIONS! This can be done in a manner without causing offense. If the consultant is offended, that should be a red flag.

Example: “I noticed on the official Sisterlocks website that I should receive a Starter Kit with my Sisterlocks package. Do you offer this as part of your package?” (Notice I stated, “official” Sisterlocks website, not what BlaqKofi or Pookie or Chante ‘dem said on their blog.)

Perhaps she simply forgot to mention it to you. Perhaps she’s temporarily out and waiting on her supply delivery. If she doesn’t have a good explanation and if it’s not included in your package – red flag.

Check out the Sisterlocks Trainee web page….there are three to four times more trainees than Certified Consultants. Have you ever wondered why?

There are some really qualified trainees who have been doing Sisterlocks for sometime. Some simply choose not to take the time, effort and cost to go through the certification process. Or perhaps Sisterlocks may be supplemental income to a full time job or household. Some trainees simply want to be able to do their own, or their children's hair.

Once when my regular consultant couldn’t fit me in I had a local trainee do my hair. She had been doing Sisterlocks for years. In questioning her, she shared that certification “just wasn’t important” to her. Yet, she had lots of clients and did an excellent job with my locks.

I became certified before another consultant in my area, despite the fact that she had been doing locks a year longer than me. Her delay was a mix up in the paperwork at the corporate office. What’s important is the timeframe that they have been a trainee and the WHY they aren’t certified.

What hours/days do you work?
Be sure your Consultant's schedule will work with yours. Some Consultants work part-time or limited hours.

What are your rescheduling guidelines?
Life happens, however, if there are consistent cancellations, missed appointments, etc. without calling, a Consultant may choose to charge a fee or simply not reschedule you. That’s why it’s important to discuss hours of operation and any specific scheduling challenges you may have (i.e. a doctor, flight attendant, on-call work, rotating shifts, etc.)

During the follow-up visit what service will I receive?
The follow-up visit, part of your installation package, should include a complimentary retightening. If not - red flag.

How long will my retightening appointments last?

What if I have problems with my locks requiring extra time during retightenings; is there an additional charge?Sometimes there is lock slippage, not uncommon in some of the sensitive areas such as the nape, front hairline and around the ears, which may require additional time during the retightening session. Normal slippage is typically repaired during the session. However, I charge an hourly rate for repairs due to negligence on the part of the client (i.e. not braiding and banding before washing, using unauthorized hair products, etc.)

What tool do you use to install and retighten locks?
The answer should be “the official Sisterlocks tool.” I have read accounts of Consultants using other tools. However, to have “official” Sisterlocks only the Sisterlocks tool should be used.
Why did you choose to become a Sisterlocks Consultant?
There are a variety of answers to this question. Whatever the response, trust your intuition.

Lock Build Up

Q: I am 8 months locked and I have been having a build-up issue for about 6 of those months. I am at a total loss for what to do. I have tried Dr. Bronners as someone suggested and I have tried Suave clarifying shampoo and it just left my hair feeling really dry. Other than that I have been using the Sisterlocks Starter shampoo consistently and it does not help at all. I really don't know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?

Blaq: My first question would be, have you discussed this with your locktician? She should be able to give you some solid advice. If you haven't, please do so.

Build up usually occurs from product being left in the hair and not rinsing enough. Do you use any products on your hair other than the Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo? If so, stop. Secondly, I recommend diluting the Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo and apply using a spray bottle solution (half water/half shampoo). Braid and band prior to washing - even if you've been given the ok to stop. This will allow you to concentrate on a section of your locks at a time. Be sure to braid loosely to help shampoo and water more easily flow through your locks.

Braid & band
Thoroughly wet hair
Spray SL shampoo (diluted) onto hair
Work through each section by massaging at the scalp and working your way down the braid by squeezing shampoo to the tip (repeat for each section)
Rinse, rinse, rinse
Wash again
Rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse.... (repeat one more time if you wish)
Squeeze as much water as possible from the hair
Allow to dry (try not to go to bed with wet or damp hair)

If you're noticing a lot of build up in a particular area, be sure to concentrate on that area when washing and rinsing. Also you may consider a no-poo wash (rinsing the hair only) on the alternate weeks that you don't shampoo. This may mean washing your hair, or rinsing your hair more frequently until the buildup goes away. Then you can return to your normal washing schedule. I'm confident with these steps your buildup challenges will fade. Please don't become discouraged.

Also, do some on line research. You may go to Yahoo! LockItUp. The subject has been discussed a gazillion times there. You'll get all kinds of helpful information. I do recommend, again that you discuss your method of attack with your consultant and don't using anything on your hair that will hinder your locking process. Whatever, method you choose - try that method and that method alone - for at least a month or two. Don't switch between methods and products because that will make it difficult to determine what's working and what's not working.

Note: The Sisterlocks Starter Shampoo does not produce a great deal of lather as most of us are accustomed to with commercial shampoos. Because of this we may tend to add more shampoo..."hmmm....still not enough lather. I think I'll add some more shampoo.... hmmm... perhaps a little bit more." We find ourselves with all of this product in our hair, and may not rinse well enough. The Sisterlocks Shampoo does not cause build up, however, leaving any product in the hair that's meant to be rinsed out may leave a residue.

My Sisterlocks were a hit for Halloween. Being one of two African Americans in the office, everyone was more fascinated with my Bantu Knots than my costume. They all wanted to touch them and questioned, "how'd you get your hair like that?"

Sisters To Sisters

October is designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For those of you who have followed my blog for some time, you know that my baby sister and best friend, "T" was diagnosed four years ago. You can read the original post dated June 1, 2006.

There are countless ways you can assist in helping to fund research for a cure of this horrible disease. It's as easy as visting the Breast Cancer web site and clicking a link so that a woman receives a free mammogram or as simple as collecting and submitting Yoplait Yogurt lids to help fund the fight against Breast Cancer. For every lid submitted by December 31, 2009, Yoplait will donate 10 cents to Susan G. Komen for the Cure up to $1.5 million with a guaranteed $500,00 donation. Of course, there's the annual Susan G. Komen Walk held throughout the country each year. We can all do something - don't wait until it personally affects you.

I traveled home to Texas this weekend to spend time with my sister and family. T and I had a blast as we always do! And although you can't tell from these beautiful photos of her - she is very ill, suffers and struggles daily. Yet, she continues to inspire, uplift and motivate others who are in need. She has a big heart and is as beautiful inside as her outward appearance.
I'd like to enlist your help - sisters to sisters: For those of you who believe in a higher power - please remember my sister, Teresa and if you feel compelled to do so - please comment with words of encouragement for my "lil sis" as a very special gift of strength to her during this time.

She is indeed my Shero.

Righting the Wrong @ 51M

I've been busy with life - growing beyond measure along with my Sisterlocks.

My self portrait attempts were not quite successful this month. I ran out of patience and time before I could capture a good shot. But when combined as a collage, they somewhat right the wrong providing a visual of my Sisterlocks at 51M. They remain healthy, strong, vibrant and ever growing.

I'll have food for the mind and spirit when next we meet. And yes, I'm still lovin' my Sisterlocks!

Up Do @ 50M

I haven't done much with my hair this summer except wear it mostly in a pony tail because of it's length and the summer heat - did I say length? Oh, the beauty of Sisterlocks!

Today for church I did this quick and easy up do that I thought I'd share with my readers. I took these photos myself using a tripod, so they're not the best. Since I wasn't really happy with most of the shots I included several in the following slideshow hoping that collectively you'll gather a feeling for the style and the ease in recreating it yourself.

How To Create Your Own Up Do

Supplies needed: Hair tie, a few hair pins
Time required: 5 minutes or less
Instructions:

Pull locks into a high pony, ideally using a hair tie. (Hair ties secure the locks without pulling or snagging, they stay in place and they don't give me a headache.)
Gently remove a few locks along the front and nape of the neck if you so desire (to add softness)
Partially separate locks in high pony down the middle, gently pulling each side towards the back, tucking ends underneath hair tie
Smooth and shape, tucking any loose locks with hair pins
Curl locks at nape of neck and front
You're done!

Mom recently celebrated her two year loc'versary. I'm so proud of her. Here's mom a mere two years later with locks sitting on her shoulders, getting compliments left and right and having to pull her hair up off her neck. She even surprised me and did her own braidout for Sunday church. Don't know why I was surprised - that's BlaqKofi's momma.

Mom never studied Sisterlocks or natural hair. She doesn't even own a computer. I remember feeling uncertain and nervous accompanying her to the consultation, still not quite believing she would commit. This is a woman who has been on the same job for 35 plus years - to say she's not a proponant of change is a major understatement. I so firmly knew this facet of her that my mind never even remotely processed the equation of Mom + Natural + Sisterlocks. Don't know why not - that's BlaqKofi's momma.

Consultation complete, test locks installed we thanked my consultant, Gigi and headed for the car. Once outside...

Mom:"I thought we were going to make my appointment to get them put in?"
Blaq: "Are you sure?"
Mom: "That's what I came here for."
Blaq: "Alright then. Let's go make your appointment."

I was so excited. We turned right around and made her appointment. A month later she was on lock down. Little did I know that while quietly observing my natural awakening, mom in turn was awakened. I should have known. That's BlaqKofi's momma!

Two years later, my sister has observed my mom's journey and recently said to me,

Sister: "if my hair could look as good as yours and moms, I'd get Sisterlocks."Blaq: "it can"
Another unlikely equation, or so I thought. She is now preparing to cross over. (I think there's a lesson in there somewhere.)

Each one reach one, teach one, lift one...

I did it, my Sisters - BlaqKofi, Certified Sisterlocks Consultant. The first certified consultant in the State of Oklahoma! I discovered this wonderful news Thurs, July 30, a bright spot in an otherwise very stressful day. (Thanks for your thoughtful phone call, LaShaune.)
A special thank you to my first three clients, "M" "S" and "Abuelita" for being the first to put your trust in me. I'm certified because of each of you. Locked4Life!

My certification, a blog comment from Happiest Nappy (I ab-so-lute-ly LOVE that name!) compelled me to share the following in celebration of my Sisters. The author is unknown.
A young wife sat on a sofa on a hot, humid day, drinking iced tea and visiting with her mother. As they talked about life, about marriage, about the responsibilities of life and the obligations of adulthood, the mother clinked the ice cubes in her glass thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober glance upon her daughter 'Don't forget your Sisters,' she advised, swirling the tea leaves to the bottom of her glass.

‘They'll be more important as you get older. No matter how much you love your husband, no matter how much you love the children you may have, you are still going to need Sisters. Remember to go places with them now and then; do things with them.

'Remember that 'Sisters' means ALL the women... your girlfriends, your daughters, and all your other women relatives too. You'll need other women. Women always do...'

‘What a funny piece of advice!' the young woman thought. Haven't I just gotten married? Haven't I just joined the couple-world? I'm now a married woman, for goodness sake! A grownup! Surely my husband and the family we may start will be all I need to make my life worthwhile!'

But she listened to her Mother. She kept contact with her Sisters and made more women friends each year. As the years tumbled by, one after another, she gradually came to understand that her Mom really knew what she was talking about. As time and nature work their changes and their mysteries upon a woman, Sisters are the mainstays of her life.

After more than 50 years of living in this world, here is what I've learned:

THIS SAYS IT ALL:
Time passes.
Life happens.
Distance separates.
Children grow up.
Jobs come and go.
Love waxes and wanes.
Men don't do what they're supposed to do.
Hearts break.
Parents die.
Colleagues forget favors...
Careers end.

BUT.........Sisters are there, no matter how much time and how many miles are between you. A girl friend is never farther away than needing her can reach. When you have to walk that lonesome valley and you have to walk it by yourself, the women in your life will be on the valley's rim, cheering you on,praying for you, pulling for you, intervening on your behalf, and waiting with open arms at the valley's end.

Sometimes, they will even break the rules and walk beside you...Or come in and carry you out. Girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers, Grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended family all bless our life!

The world wouldn't be the same without women, and neither would I. When we began this adventure called womanhood, we had no idea of the incredible joys or sorrows that lay ahead. Nor did we know how much we would need each other.

Everyday, we need each other still.

Pass this on to all the women who help make your life meaningful.I just did.

Dedicated to those who encourage me to continue Natural Awakening. I am inspired by those who write to share how NA influenced their decision to lock and it's usefulness as a resource throughtout their journey.

The Michael That I Choose To See

Michael Jackson and I are relatively the same age - separated by about 16 months. His untimely death and my impending 50th birthday has caused me to do a great deal self reflection. I'm more focused than ever on living my dreams and trying to be happy for, as evidenced by Michael, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, Farah Fawcett, Billy Mays, David Carradine, Gerald Levert, Sean Levert and others, tomorrow is not promised.

His death has touched me, troubled me, hurt me. As a young girl, my bedroom walls were plastered with Jackson 5 photos. I would save every dime to buy a teen magazine for another photo to add to my collection. The first concert I ever attended was to see the Jackson 5. I wrote Michael countless, nine-year-old-never-mailed-fan-letters.

So much has been written and said about Michael's life - there's not much left to say. As I struggled to process his death along with all that's occuring in my life, I received an email from a friend of mine, Linda Jones of Dallas, whose words fully captured my feelings about Michael, his death and how I choose to remember him. I haven't had much time to blog. Despite less frequent updates I am encouraged by the constant emails and messages I receive from queens who are discovering their inner beauty and strength through their naturalness, Sisterlocks and Natural Awakenings.

My locks remain healthy and strong. Not much change other than added length. My Sisterlocks customer base continues to grow and I am blessed. I am awaiting certification notifcation from the Home Office.

Until then, I ask that you lift me as I lift you.
