I blogged recently about my new outlook on life. This revelation was brought on by several events:
The passing of a girlfriend, 40 years old, in a single car accident - never experiencing motherhood which she so desperately wanted;
The passing a few weeks later of a good friend and the first African American Fire Chief for the City of Fort Worth. Closed his eyes on a Friday evening, never to open them again. Dead, of a heart attack while sleeping, 49 years old.
My baby sister's breast cancer and double mastecomy at only 39.
And today's unexpected passing of Gerald Levert, 40 years old.
As I attended my friends' funerals and watch my sister endure the pain of Cancer, chemo, a mastectomy and future radiation, the realization of life's frailty woke me with a slap in the face. Tonight, this scripture came to mind,
Whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. James 4:14
A reminder to enjoy those whom we love and life's abundance while we can because we are, but a vapor...
A tribute to the gifted Gerald Levert follows. I vividly remember watching his performance with Marsha of Floetry and being blown away by their respective talents. It is one of my favorites. Rest in peace my beautiful, black, gifted king.

What a beautiful post. A true reminder that we do indeed have to live everyday like it's our last.
A very thoughtful post! I too love the performance by Marsha and Gerald that was performed on the BET tribute to Smokey i often thought it should be recorded. I had taped it and misplaced it. Thank you, Thank you for posting it.
