What Size Are Your Locks?

I'm often asked by those considering or about to lock, "what size are your Sisterlocks?" I'm always hesitant to answer that question, because it's somewhat difficult to explain.

Here's my official answer to, "what size are your Sisterlocks?"

Hi Blaq, I love your blog. And can I just say, you're beautiful, inside and out. My Sisterlocks are being installed the last weekend in March. I'm very excited. I've read so many blogs that I can't remember certain details, but my loctician told me today she will be placing a variety of sizes of sisterlocks. Small up front to increase my styling options and then a combo of large and medium in other areas. I would like my locs to be about your size. Thus, would you be kind enough to tell me the size of your locs or send me the link to the page of your blog where you discuss this?

Thanks so much for visiting my blog and your kind words. I appreciate each and every one.

You won't find an area of my blog that talks about the size of my locks because I have a hard time explaining it. I called my consultant this morning to ensure I give you accurate information. When I locked my consultant informed me how she was going to install my locks. I didn't have to make a decision. I simply trusted her.

Sisterlocks official training teaches consultants to install small locks in the front along the hairline and begin to get slightly larger through the crown and the back of the head. These are called "traditional" Sisterlocks. That's how my locks were installed. I think people begin to panic when they hear "larger in the back." But if your consultant's good, the size change is gradual giving your locks a uniform look. That's why the SL parting is so important and will determine how your locks "lay."

In summary, what your loctician told you was correct. I hope this helps some. You might want to ask your consultant for photos of her work. Also, check out my post below "21 Months -Wearing My Testimony" and the retightening photos. Compare the hairline and back of the head shots....you really can't see any noticeable difference in the lock size. Another benefit of using a certified consultant, IMHO.

I'm so excited that you have decided to cross over. You won't regret it and it will be the happiest time of your life.

Thanks Tis Safiya for permission to post your question. Welcome home to Sisterlocks. I'm looking forward to checking out your blog and watching your progress.

I have seen a Sisterlocks sizing card with sizes small, medium, large, and too large. If the sizes are standardized, then you will be speaking the same language.

Hi Blaq,

My loctician told me that my locks were medium starting in the front on back and then large in the back, so I believe that follows what you are talking about in your post. And like you, I trusted my loctician and I am glad I did because I first told her I wanted all "small" and she explained to me the Sisterlocks method considering thickness of hair, texture etc. so she said if I got all small my hair would look like a lions mame, I don't know if she used those words, but basically that is what she was saying (smile).....Good post.

Who can't relate to this post. Who can't agree that those super tiny locks are gorgeous, but a bit impractical for the average woman IMHO. Even having them super tiny at the hairline I'm starting to question because over time, they become so tiny and fragile at the root they have to be combined anyway. So many women have had to go through this - including myself!

I am very happy with my standard small locks.

Blaq when Dr. Cornwell compared her locks at the sisterlocks class in Boston and her locks where installed the same way, small, medium and large in the back. It flows nicely and the change in so gradual that you don't notice it.

You color looks fierce! You are my color idol.

Hi Blaq!

First let me say that I LOVE your blog. It has been a wonderful resource for me. You've put great pictures out there - some of THE BEST I've seen. And I really enjoy reading your words.

Just following your posts and comments answered a lot of my questions.

I started my blog at the beginning of February although I was not locked until the end of March. As soon as Maryee can get around to it, I hope to join the LHBE. In the meantime please drop by and check it out.

One of the things I've written extensively about was my obsession with lock size and I appreciated the explanation you gave here. I included a link from my post to yours. Hope that's okay.

Please keep up the great work!
