The True Cost of Sisterlocks ~ A Blaq Perspective

Macolm and I took a sunset walk at the lake today. The weather was perfect – aided by a light breeze that caressed my skin and gently set my locks in motion, to-n-fro. I thought, what a wonderful feeling. A feeling of pride. A feeling of self. SISTERLOCKS.

Several of my clients have mentioned a LockItUp thread where someone questioned the cost of Sisterlocks. Not an altogether unfamiliar subject. Apparently a consultant replied rather bluntly sighting, among other things, the job’s physical demands.

Divide the installation cost, by the install hours and complimentary follow-up time to get your Consultant’s hourly installation rate. The relevance of that hourly rate depends on your personal perspective. Some seem to think they are paying for a hairstyle of which Sisterlocks is not. Nor is Sisterlocks a fad. I define Sisterlocks as a permanent transition from one state to another – hair, body, mind and spirit.

Can you truly attach monetary value to a personal freedom never known? Or the bond that develops between like-minded sisters? Or the self awareness that emerges along with your growing locks?

I know some of you just gotta put a dollar to it…ok, how bout this? Savings from the products you no longer need to buy…hair purchases…installation costs…installation hours… removal costs and time...hours gained from the all-day beauty shop experience...wigs and other accessories between take down and “gurl-my-head lookin’-bad" days.

Repeat and pay…repeat and pay...repeat and pay...repeat and pay...repeat and pay... repeat and pay…repeat and pay...Two to three of these repetitions easily covers the cost of a Sisterlocks installation.   Factor in the hours gained from NOT waiting, NOT taking down or removing hair, NOT re-installing hair every 4 weeks and you actually come out ahead with Sisterlocks!
"Hello, may I speak to BlaqKofi?
This is she.
I’d like to schedule a Sisterlocks appointment, but I have (insert one or more of the following: alopecia, thinning hair line, no hair line, bald areas, damaged hair"…)
From a Consultant’s perspective, I consider it a privilege and an honor each time I transition a queen through her Sisterlocks Rights-of-Passage.  I am blessed by knowing my clients. They are giving, kind and genuinely caring people.

Each visit is exclusively their time to relax with soothing music, talk or not, laugh, sleep, read, watch TV,  a movie or just enjoy the quiet. I have a special,  unique connection with each.   My biggest reward - watching as a queen looks in the mirror, her naked naturalness staring back for the first time. Then receiving that knowing smile that says she's home and she's free.

I couldn’t begin to put a value on the benefits and blessings of being natural and being a Consultant.  Having Sisterlocks is the icing on the cake and worth every cent!
Consultant Fees - Several Hundred $
Installation Commitment – One time 13-20 hours
Monthly Commitment – 2 to 3 hours
Products Required – None
Finding my Consultant and her chair waiting for me  –

PRICELESS!!!
More than hair FREEDOM…SISTERLOCKS!

Hey Blaq

Well Said. Love the post! It's been a while, glad to hear from you. I need to shoot you an email or possibly call you about a installation I have comming up.

It's funny how you mentioned locks in motion. That's the name of my business, but spelled Locks-N-Motion! You should check out my website, http://www.locks-n-motion.com. Check it out before I chaange it, I recently got a new logo and want to change the whole look so that it can match. Anyhow I should have just called, lol.

P.S. love your new playlist, I need to purchase a couple of these cd's.
Hope all is well, take care,
V

You can say that again! Nothing compares to my almost 8 year journey, I've loved every minute of it!

Just a question...I LOVE the style/shape of your hair. I have long sisterlocks and miss the length that you currently have so much! Do you cut your SL's into your current style? I think I see some pretty precise layers that fall beautifully.

Thanks!
P :)

Excellent post! Anyone who takes there time to research sisterlocks for the right reasons will never really complain about the cost of it all if they understand and embrace what they are gaining. Those getting sisterlocks for a fad will only see it as such, a fad and not worth it.

I agree Gigglz!
Great post Blaq!
Lately, my suggestion to people is to not only save for your installation but find out the average cost for your retights and to try to save for 6 of those as well. Plan ahead and be prepared.

Nice post~
As a crocheter and "sometimes" knitter, I understand the price of working with your hands for hours on end. I like SL, but cannot afford them at this time. I still promote them to sisters who can though. It is a great new way of wearing our hair in all of its natural beauty!

Take Care~

Well, this is my first time really leaving a commit on a blog. But after reading several commits I had too. I too love your locs. For me after three years I have decided to get Sister Locs my appointment is Saturday June 19th, I can't wait! A question I have is how do you keep your locs looking so neat an even? Is it because you get them redone every 4 weeks?

BlaqKofi said...

Anonymous, yes, regularly scheduled retites keep your locks looking neat. After 5 yrs I'm still on an every 4 wk cycle. Some prefer a 5 to 6 week cycle. But I like the more manicured look. Congrats on the decision to cross over - on Juneteenth no less! You go girl!!!

Amen and amen. I love your equation of the cost of Sisterlocks - may I borrow it and give you credit?
