I've been checking your Website daily for more posts on your highlights. Are you happy with them?

So here you have it - Blaq's highlights...

I've been waiting until I felt comfortable with my highlights before posting pics. I asked for subtle, but got a little more "in yo face" than I was expecting.

I can't honestly say that I'm totally comfortable with the look, but everyone seems to like them. I won't do anything to try and tone them down, I'll just wait for nature to do it's thing. I'm confident that over time, I'll love them. I definitely like them more now than I did day one.

The highlights have given my locks a new dimension. So I decided to embrace the look and take the opportunity to switch things up some. I shopped for new head bands, like the one I'm wearing here, purchased some cute and funky earrings and bracelets and tried some different tones of Mac makeup.

I've been freestyling, wearing my hair up in a high pony or gathered at the nape with my B-tie. My new glasses that I'll pick up tomorrow will finish out my new funky look. It's been fun, although a little out of my comfort zone.

Check out all of my attempts to find a style that I'm comfortable with...

So, what y'all think?

You are a beautiful woman and you look great whatever you do to your hair. I prefer the more subtle you. However, I'm sure you will be able to make this new look work for you.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Choco...you're sweet and I appreciate the encouragement. I like the more subtle me, too. That's what I get for trying to be grown..LOL!

You do such a great job taking natural-looking pictures of yourself. I've always wondered how you do it. Do you use a tripod? How do you set it up?

I don't know if your blog is the right place to ask this, but, you've inspired me to start a blog. I was floored by how complecated it is! (and I prize myself with being intelligent :-) Do you have any suggestions to help me get started?

I have Casio Exilim 7.2 Mega Pixels camera recommended to me by Maryee and LaChanda...it has a self timer that takes three consecutive pics. I just find something level to set the camera on and smile. You'll know my timer pics, I always take them in either my bathroom or my bedroom so the backgrounds always teh same, then I just crop the pics...the outdoor shots are taken by my X. He's always been a big supporter of my natural journey and really gets a kick taking my photos.

Choco, hit me up via email and I'll walk you through setting up your blog. It's actually pretty simple. You've probably just hit a snag. blaqkofi@yahoo.com.

Blessings.

I think your highlights look great, but I was kind of surprised, because they are not subtle. But they work for you -- and I'm sure you can handle the extra attention they will surely bring now.

I really like them in curls the best -- I like how the lighter color defines the curl.

But just live with them a while, and if you don't like them, have them darkened.

Also, be careful with clarifying shampoos so that you don't lose the color. You probably know this- so there's no need for me to say anything (sorry). But I realized only recently that it's my Aveda Detox that stops me from being able to keep my highlights covered.

Thanks, B for the encouragement and feedback! Actually I didn't know about the clarifying shampoo and that's what I use. I'll email you off line for you to explain what you mean by, "the Aveda Detox stops me from being able to keep my highlights covered." Thanks again for the support.

Oh, I'll try to explain a little better...

I've tried to get rid of my highlights by dying them back to my natural color three times. The last time was in March (http://brunsli.blogspot.com/2007/03/my-other-hair-news.html) Only, after a couple weeks (2-3 washings), they're back again. I came to the conclusion that that strong Aveda Detox shampoo was taking the color out.

When you have highlights put in, usually there are two processes even in a one-step application -- the hair is bleached (I think of as up), and a dye color is added (i think of this as down). A clarifying shampoo may pull the dye out (since they clean really well), leaving you with hair that's been lightened. As a result, your highlights could get lighter over time, as your hair goes back to the color that it was bleached up to, since the dye that brought the color down is washed out. This is also why dyed hair becomes brassy over time. It's best to use a shampoo for color treated hair, or at least a shampoo for daily washing, which is not very strong.

As long as I'm going on about hair, I guess I'll mention red hair dye as well. For some reason, red hair dye washes out the fastest, so you're in good shape since yours are blond-ie.

I hope this helps, if not, email me again!

I must say that I love your hair. I like the color best and the curls as a close second. It is fab-u-lous. It just accents your skin so nicely. I officially have loc envy.

I have been visiting your blog for a while now and I love your locks -- even with the new highlights. I got sisterlocks about a year ago but a few months ago I started to think about cutting them off. Reading your blog and seeing your pictures has helped convince me that I should keep them.

Blaq,

I have been waiting for your post also. It also took me a little while to get used to them. I always like mine better after they fade. I did ask her to tone them down on the first set. Now that we got the color of my unlighted hair what I want, I even like them more.

Your color looks bold and fabulous. If you still feel uncomfortable after a couple of months then think about your options. She can give you some low lights. By then hopefully you'll love them. By the way I felt the same way that they were a little too out there for me.

I was told not to use the clarifying shampoos also. They can strip the color and can be very drying to the hair.

Hang your head high. Miss beautiful and fabulous lock sister.

Now folks will say who is that sister with the locks and the great color!

I knew you would get addicted to that color! It seems like so long ago I was telling you what I used. Sigh. Your hair looks great no matter what, but I think the contrast could be subtler. My eyes are drawn to the highlights instead of to you. Just my opinion...that said it looks fun and summery!

Go Ms. Thang, work that color. I do like it on you.

Hey Blaq,
Honestly, I love your highlights! I think its a funky spin on the beautiful color you already had. It's not quite as subtle as I know you would have liked. But, trust me when it fades it will be right on point. I especially love the highlights with the curls!

Keep working it!

SisterGURL!

I love the highlights! I know what you mean about the brightness vs. sublety and I think that in time you will love them!

Mine have started to fade out/grow and unfortunately I can't have them redone due to so many baby locks that I have from splitting.

You make me want to go and get it done anyway (lol).
